MTP Ride Leader - King County

What We Need

Cascade Bicycle Club is looking for self-motivated cyclists with a passion for youth development and building community to work part time for the Major Taylor Project. MTP Ride Leaders facilitate after-school and summer bicycle enrichment programming for racially, ethnically, and linguistically diverse students in 6th - 12th grade.

Reporting to the regional King County MTP Manager, MTP Ride Leaders are responsible for weekly route planning, lesson planning and facilitation, mentoring, organizing, and leading small group rides for young people in the greater Seattle and Tacoma area.

Ride Leaders will be assigned at least one club to coordinate and lead, with an option for more. MTP clubs provide youth with the opportunity to explore their communities, build relationships with fellow riders, continuously challenge themselves, and have fun. This is a great opportunity for an individual with a passion for cycling and teaching, counseling, or advocacy.

Candidates with bicycle mechanical experience desired.

Bilingual candidates (e.g. Spanish, Vietnamese, Somali, Portuguese) strongly desired.

Who We Are

Cascade Bicycle Club, the nation's largest statewide bicycle nonprofit, is 9,500-members, 55-years old, and 43-staff strong, serving bike riders of all ages and abilities throughout the state of Washington. We teach the joys of bicycling, advocate for safe places to ride, and produce community rides and events. Our signature programs include the Seattle to Portland ride, the Pedaling Relief Project, advocacy for connected trail networks and on-street bike networks in Seattle and across the Puget Sound Region, the Your Streets Your Say, Free Group Rides, Adult Classes, Let's Go, and the Major Taylor Project.

The Major Taylor Project is a youth development program within the Education Department at Cascade Bicycle Club.The Education department shares the joy of cycling with young people across Washington state. We are dedicated to creating, sharing, and improving programs that are inclusive, impactful, and responsive to our diverse community.

The Major Taylor Project works to break down barriers to cycling for youth of color. We believe that bicycling is a form of exercise that fosters not only healthy bodies and minds, but also healthy communities. Students that participate in our free-of-cost program also have the opportunity to receive a bicycle and safety equipment free-of-cost.

MTP students are encouraged to use the bicycle to expand their worldview and explore the agency they have to change themselves and their communities. Programming takes place at partnering schools and community-based organizations throughout King and Pierce county.

What You’ll Bring

Duties and Responsibilities

• Facilitate bicycling education regarding:
  • Learning to ride a bicycle
  • Using a bicycle as safe, active transportation
  • Bicycle maintenance/assembly
• Plan, coordinate, and implement weekly rides, and program activities
• Visual documentation of club operations, eg, weekly photos and videos of club activities
• Be responsible for safety and risk management
• Conduct outreach and recruitment activities for MTP bike clubs
• Build a supportive MTP community through facilitation of team building activities and growth-mindset engagement
• Record and maintain all relevant administrative data for site programming including: attendance records, volunteer records, completed rides, etc.
• Maintain a clean and organized workspace, fleet, and supportive equipment library, communicating supply needs, fleet maintenance, and site challenges

Qualifications

• Desire and skill to work with youth between the ages of 12 to 18
• Ability to ride a bike proficiently for extended periods of time with others
• Commitment to Social Justice and Racial Equity
• Group management and facilitation skills
• Patience, punctuality, and accountability
• Must be willing and able to work outdoors in varied conditions
• Basic computer knowledge and skills
• Must pass a background check for work directly with minors
• Willingness to learn

Desired Qualifications

• In-depth bicycling experience
• Experience with bicycle repair and/or maintenance
• Conflict mediation experience
• Youth development and enrichment experience
• Lived experience in the communities where MTP operates
• Experience supporting racial, health, mobility, and/or environmental equity and justice programs and outcomes
• Multi-lingual

Job Details

This is a Part-time, hourly Non-Exempt position. This position is primarily field-work based, working at various schools and community-based organizations in King County. Team members may be assigned to work a maximum of 30 hrs/wk during club seasons.

Seasons and Hours of Clubs:

• Ride Leader hours vary, with traditional hours of operation ranging between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
  • Club rides run 2-3 hours per club day
  • Clubs operate one day per week
• Billable Hours
  • The average club should provide at least 4hr/wk of work (Approximate Hours)
    1. 5 hr of planning & administrative work
    2. 5 hours of club operations including set-up and clean-up
  • Ride Leaders are expected to scout and pre-ride routes, billing for these hours
• Programming Seasons align with the academic year, with some weekend and summer event and programming opportunities
• Ride Leaders are expected to attend all of their scheduled clubs for a complete season
  • Seasons are between 8 and 10 weeks, depending on the site
  • Ride Leaders can work up to 3 clubs in a season, when available
  • Non-health related absences and work conflicts should be communicated at least a week in advance
