    Panthera has been present in Malaysia through partners for almost a decade. In the beginning of 2020, Panthera incorporated an office in Malaysia - Panthera Wild Cat Conservation Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. (Panthera Malaysia).

    Panthera’s Project Tekai started in 2023 and is focused on the monitoring and protection of the Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni), as well as all other wild cat species in the Al-Sultan Abdullah Royal Tiger Reserve (ASARTR), also known as the Tekai Core Area in Pahang. The project’s main objectives are to stabilize and recover the population of tigers and other wild cats in the landscape following the Panthera’s Regional Development Strategy for South and Southeast Asia in Malaysia.

    Role Overview

    The Problem Analyst for Project Tekai will collaborate with a team to conduct analytical work supporting research and conservation efforts for wild cat populations in the Tekai Core Area. Reporting to the Project Coordinator and guided by the Counter Wildlife Crime (CWC) team, the analyst will adhere to Panthera’s code of conduct, standard operating procedures, and values while maintaining professional work ethics. The role may involve occasional support for other Panthera projects to share knowledge and expertise, as directed by the Malaysia Country Director.

    The Problem Analyst will work closely with the Wildlife Analyst, CWC Analyst, Patrol Specialist, and Project Coordinator to ensure analytical outputs inform conservation strategies and field operations. Under the guidance of the Lead of Counter Wildlife Crime Program Analytics, the analyst will manage data related to threats to wild cats and conduct in-depth analyses to guide strategic interventions.

    Key responsibilities

    • Conduct threat assessments and lead problem analysis projects to produce reports and recommendations that inform conservation strategies for tigers and other wild cats in the Tekai Core Area and across Peninsular Malaysia.
    • Collaborate with the Lead of Program Analytics to monitor threats, assess interventions, and evaluate their effectiveness.
    • Partner with analysts from relevant organizations on problem analysis projects as assigned by the Project Coordinator or Country Manager.
    • Produce reports, guides, and scientific publications to share best practices in wildlife protection.
    • Deliver quarterly briefing reports on threat assessments and recommendations to the Project Coordinator and Country Manager, ensuring timely communication with partner agencies.
    • Support the development of proposals, research designs, and reports for donors, partners, and stakeholders.
    • Design and deliver trainings and workshops relevant to the role’s scope.
    • Manage patrol and threat data using the Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool (SMART) database.
    • Synthesize data from field collections, community interviews, media, and other sources to inform analyses and share findings with team members and stakeholders.
    • Collaborate with the Patrol Specialist and team members to curate information from patrols and local communities.
    • Assist law enforcement agencies with post-arrest interviews to enhance understanding of poaching, trafficking, and related wildlife crimes.
    • Work with the Wildlife Analyst to analyze the impact of threats on key wildlife species and assess intervention effectiveness.
    • Perform regular patrol data analysis to monitor vigilance levels, incursion distribution, and rates to inform patrol planning.
    • Ensure clear communication of analytical outputs to the Project Coordinator, Country Director, Patrol Lead, Wildlife Analyst, and field teams.
    • Manage Poachercam units and other conservation technologies to monitor key access points in the Core Area.
    • Support patrol preparation, including maps, equipment, and briefing/debriefing sessions.
    • Lead the preparation of post-operation reports, threat assessments, and related documents.

    Essential Duties

    • Build and maintain strong relationships with project partners and stakeholders, including government representatives.
    • Uphold professional conduct within the team and with external partners.
    • Deliver assigned tasks on schedule with high-quality outputs.
    • Stay updated on advancements in biodiversity monitoring and wildlife crime science through meetings, workshops, and conferences.
    • Comply with Panthera’s Employee Handbook, code of conduct, ethics, and Patrol Standard Operating Procedures.
    • Align with Panthera’s programmatic vision, objectives, and intellectual property policies.
    • Ensure compliance with all applicable Malaysian laws and regulations.

    Required Qualifications, Skills & Experience

    An ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

    • Master’s degree in Criminology, Psychology, Conservation Science, Social Sciences, or a related field.
    • 2–3 years of relevant work experience preferred.
    • Strong commitment to Panthera’s mission, with personal qualities of integrity and credibility.
    • Exceptional attention to detail and strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to work under pressure and in remote field conditions.
    • Team-oriented mindset with adherence to protocols and safety guidelines.
    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with professionalism.
    • Knowledge of Malaysia’s conservation and policy landscape is an advantage.
    • Proficiency in Bahasa Malaysia and English required.
    • Valid Malaysian driving license (Class D) preferred.
