Fossil Fuel Treaty Campaign Contractor

Stand.earth is seeking a creative and experienced Fossil Fuel Treaty Campaigner for a part-time contract position starting as soon as possible and running through to the end of December 2025 (with the possibility of extension). Reporting to the SAFE Cities Climate Campaigner, this position will be responsible for raising the profile of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty (FFNPT) initiative by helping local governments pass resolutions endorsing the Treaty while strengthening our network of Treaty activists in Canada. They will also support Stand.earth's SAFE Cities campaign by helping municipalities pass policies reducing or eliminating fossil fuels in buildings. The ideal candidate has strong connections to the climate movement in Canada, in particular in Atlantic Canada and/or Ontario, a demonstrated track record of successfully working to pass climate policies, and experience in collaborating with volunteers and diverse stakeholders.

Scope of Work:

Key Responsibilities

• Identify and leverage strategic opportunities to grow the Fossil Fuel Treaty's footprint in Canada, in particular across Atlantic Canada and Ontario
• Help resource and design small-scale campaigns that result in wins at the local level
• Develop and maintain relationships with climate activists, local government officials, and other partners
• Steward and grow the North American FFNPT Coalition of movement allies and activists by inviting and following up with participants and attending monthly Network calls
• Draft compelling content to promote the Treaty, including scripts for reels, blogs, social media posts, and other mediums as appropriate
• Support the SAFE Cities team to advance municipal policies that tangibly reduce fossil fuel use in buildings
• Participate in SAFE Cities events in support of local green building policies

Qualifications and Skills

• Experience in advancing government policy or resolutions, ideally but not necessarily at the municipal level
• Proven track record of developing and implementing effective public campaign strategies and tactics
• Experience in building organizing networks and collaborative campaign planning with diverse stakeholders
• Excellent written communication skills in English
• Ability to quickly assimilate complex information and identify strategic opportunities
• Passion for combatting the fossil fuel industry and climate change
• Strong preference for a candidate with climate and other community networks and deep knowledge of the political and cultural landscape in Atlantic Canada or, if not, in Ontario
• Preference for candidates with working French language skills
• Preference for experience with digital campaigning and organizing

Projected Contract Hours & Rate:

This is a part-time contract position until the end of December 2025 (with possibility for extension). The hourly rate offered will be $55 CAD per hour for up to 20 hours per week.

The location for this contract position is fully remote in Canada. Ideally the candidate will be based in Atlantic Canada or Southern Ontario to build relationships with community groups and support local events, but we are open to other remote locations. The candidate must be willing and able to do occasional travel within Canada.
