    Protect Our Care is seeking a strategic, experienced, and values-driven Director of Development to lead and grow our fundraising efforts across both our 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities. This role is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the organization’s revenue generation strategy including institutional grants, major donor cultivation, and funder stewardship. Working closely with the Chair, President, senior program staff, and communications leadership, the Director will shape and execute a high-impact fundraising strategy that supports the organization’s policy advocacy and public education mission.

    This is a senior leadership position ideal for a skilled fundraiser who thrives in a campaign-style, fast-paced policy environment and is comfortable leading a small but high-functioning development team.

    Key Responsibilities

    Fundraising Strategy and Leadership

    • Design and implement Protect Our Care’s annual and multi-year fundraising plans across c3 and c4 entities.
    • Serve as chief architect of the organization’s donor strategy, with a particular focus on expanding institutional partnerships and high-net-worth individual giving.
    • Set annual fundraising goals in alignment with program priorities and organizational capacity, and report progress to leadership.
    • Ensure full compliance with IRS and fiscal sponsor requirements for both restricted and unrestricted funds and with other team members
    • Manage and oversee the organization’s budget.
    • Represent the organization at key events.

    Donor Cultivation and Stewardship

    • Manage and grow a portfolio of key donors and funders, including foundations, advocacy donors, and individual philanthropists.
    • Along with the organization’s leadership, serve as primary relationship manager for Protect Our Care’s most significant funders and prospects.
    • Oversee and ensure high-quality donor cultivation materials, proposals, reports, and briefings.
    • Prepare executive leadership and board members for funder engagement and accompany them in meetings as needed.

    Team Management and Supervision

    • Reports to Protect Our Care’s President
    • Supervise the Deputy Director of Development and Development Coordinator, setting clear roles, expectations, and performance goals.
    • Provide coaching and professional development to ensure team members grow in effectiveness and capacity.
    • Ensure a culture of accountability, collaboration, and high performance within the development function.

    Systems, Operations, and Data

    • Oversee the use and evolution of the organization’s CRM (EveryAction), ensuring accurate recordkeeping, reporting, and prospect tracking.
    • Ensure systems are in place for tracking deadlines, proposals, deliverables, and funder communications.
    • Coordinate with finance and fiscal sponsor staff to produce aligned budgets and narrative reports for funders.

    Cross-Departmental Integration

    • Partner with the Policy, Communications, and Digital teams to identify fundable projects and align messaging with donor engagement.
    • Lead internal development planning meetings and serve as a thought partner to program leads on revenue strategy.
    • Represent the development department in senior staff meetings and organizational planning efforts.

    Qualifications

    • 5-10 years of nonprofit or advocacy fundraising experience, including leadership of a multi-channel fundraising program.
    • Demonstrated success securing six- and seven-figure gifts and grants from foundations and high-net-worth individuals.
    • Experience managing staff and building high-performing, collaborative teams.
    • Deep understanding of 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) compliance in fundraising, or demonstrated ability to learn quickly in a regulated fundraising environment.
    • Strong strategic planning and analytical skills; ability to connect fundraising outcomes to mission and programming.
    • Excellent writing and communication skills; must be able to produce and edit donor-facing content with minimal oversight.
    • Comfort working in a remote team environment with time-sensitive deliverables and shifting priorities.
    • Alignment with Protect Our Care’s mission and a passion for advancing equitable health care access.
    • Experience in health care policy, advocacy or development desired.

    Details and Compensation

    The position is permanently and fully remote and the salary range is $150,000 to $200,000 per year. There will be a preference for candidates living in the Washington, DC area but candidates from any location will be fully considered. This position is considered exempt for overtime purposes.

Employees are able to enroll in 401k retirement plans and are eligible for a 3% automatic contribution and up to a 3% employer match on 401k contributions. Employees will receive 120 hours of vacation time, 80 hours of health leave, up to 2 days of casual leave, and 20 hours of volunteer leave annually.
