    Location: New York City Metropolitan Area

    Reports to: Executive Director – Managing Director

    Direct Reports: Development Manager, Development Associate; Events Manager; oversees Grants Consultant (Senior Development Advisor)

    Works closely with: Executive Director, Finance & Operations, CRM Manager, Communications, Advocacy

    Compensation: $150,000

    Transportation Alternatives (TA), New York City's advocate for walking, bicycling, and public transportation, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a 50-year history of fighting for safer streets and better transportation in New York City. TA uses a combination of neighborhood-level grassroots organizing and city-wide advocacy to push for changes in public policy, street design, and resource allocation that transform our city’s streets for the better.

    ROLE OVERVIEW

    The Director of Development leads Transportation Alternatives' day-to-day fundraising program, building the systems, strategies, pipelines, and team needed to achieve the organization's contributed-revenue goals.

    Working closely with the Executive Director and overseen by the Managing Director — the Director of Development translates fundraising goals into an actionable, diversified revenue strategy across individual, foundation, corporate, and event giving, while managing forecasting, pipeline development, and the Development team with support from the Managing Director.

    TA is a hybrid office and this role requires in office work 2-3 days per week as well as occasional nights and weekends.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Executive Director Fundraising Support

    • Serve as the Executive Director's primary staff partner on fundraising, maintaining the pipeline around their priority relationships.
    • Prepare donor and funder briefings, recommend next steps, and help prioritize the Executive Director's fundraising time.

    Fundraising Strategy & Revenue Management

    • Develop TA's annual fundraising plan and manage the contributed-revenue forecast, tracking committed, projected, prospective, and at-risk revenue.
    • Monitor performance, recommend adjustments, and identify opportunities to diversify TA's revenue base.
    • Partner with Finance and the Managing Director on revenue budgeting and reporting; provide regular reporting to the Executive Director.

    Major Gifts & Individual Giving

    • Manage TA's major-gifts pipeline, personal donor portfolio, and moves management, in partnership with the Executive Director.
    • Identify and qualify new prospects; prepare the Executive Director for donor meetings and asks and ensure follow-up.
    • Lead strategy for annual giving, renewal, upgrade, and acquisition, delegating execution to the Development Manager.

    Foundation & Corporate Giving

    • Oversee TA's foundation and corporate sponsorship program, managing a portfolio of institutional funders and the proposal pipeline.
    • Work with Consultant (Senior Development Advisor), identify new funding opportunities and develop fundable priorities with organizational leaders.
    • Work with Events Manager to ensure sponsorship and other institutional commitments are met at select events.
    • Provide strategic direction and final review on key proposals while delegating drafting to Consultant (Senior Development Advisor) and grant administration of won opportunities to Managing Director.

    Donor Stewardship, Events & Board Support

    • Establish a consistent, differentiated donor and funder stewardship program, documented in TA's CRM, EveryAction.
    • Supervise the Events Manager and set fundraising and sponsorship goals for donor-facing events, including TA's annual benefit.
    • Support the Executive Director and Board Development Committee with donor materials, outreach, and tracking of fundraising commitments.

    Team Leadership & Systems

    • With support from the Managing Director, lead and manage the Development team, setting clear portfolios, goals, and performance expectations.
    • Run regular team and pipeline meetings; coach staff and build a culture of ownership and accountability.
    • Maintain strong systems for forecasting, moves management, and reporting, in partnership with the CRM Manager and Managing Director.

    Cross-Departmental Collaboration

    • Partner with Communications, Advocacy, and Finance/Operations to align fundraising with organizational priorities and systems.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Required

    • 5–7 years of experience in a development role at a nonprofit organization, with a track record of increasing responsibility.
    • Demonstrated success managing fundraising pipelines and revenue across individual, foundation, corporate, and/or event giving.
    • Experience supervising and developing staff.
    • Strong project management, forecasting, and donor CRM skills (EveryAction).
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing senior leaders for donor interactions.

    Preferred

    • Experience in transportation, urban planning, urban design, or advocacy.
    • Experience in individual giving and major gifts
