Reports to: Wikimedia NYC Executive Director
Time Commitment: Full time. The role will require evening and weekend work.
Start Date: October 5th, 2026
Location: Remote but must live in New York City
Compensation: $70,000 a year, healthcare benefits, and 401k plan

Job Description
The Events and Membership Manager position is a new role that will lead the ideation, curation, and execution of our events and member engagement strategies. In this role you will be joining a small but growing team. This position will oversee onboarding and community building for Wikimedia NYC members, and plan and execute events ranging from our monthly member gatherings and edit-a-thons to our annual flagship Wikipedia Day celebration.
Physical Demands - this position involves regular walking, standing. May occasionally involve stooping, kneeling, or crouching and lifting boxes up to 30 lbs.
Main responsibilities include:
- Event Planning and Management: Develop and maintain the Wikimedia NYC events calendar, manage event partnerships, conceptualize training events; and track event outcomes. Plan, coordinate, and execute all aspects of virtual, hybrid, and in-person events.
- Community building: Organize and support an intersectional community of Wikimedians and community leaders using on-Wikimedia communication channels, in-person events, email lists, Discord, Telegram, and other communication channels as needed.
- Evaluation: Draft and manage event budgets, track key metrics, and conduct post-event debriefs and surveys.
Deliverables include:
- Manage day-to-day operations, production, and logistics for all events.
- Oversee event setup and breakdown, registration, run of shows, execution, and volunteer coordination.
- Source and negotiate contracts with venues, vendors, caterers, and audio visual teams.
- Develop and maintain the Wikimedia NYC annual events calendar.
- Create event pages on Wikipedia and external event registration sites.
- Work with the Wikimedia NYC team to support event promotion, social media campaigns, and press/media outreach.
- Coordinate events evaluation, including impact tracking and reporting.
- Research, steward, and support the management of relationships within the local Wikimedia community and broader free knowledge ecosystem.
- Design and execute onboarding journeys for new and existing members.
- Serve as the main point of contact for member questions, feedback, and community satisfaction.
- Maintain and update the membership management database/CRM.
Must haves:
- Demonstrates deep understanding, passion, and alignment with the mission of Wikimedia New York City and the free knowledge movement.
- Experience editing Wikimedia platforms like Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata etc. and/or a deep desire and willingness to learn.
- High-level proficiency with G-Suite including Google Drive (Google Docs, Sheets, slides); Proficiency in Asana, Discord, Telegram, and CRM systems a plus.
- Event production experience, including a willingness to be directly involved in the logistics.
- Membership management experience, with a focus on community building.
- 3+ years of related experience in the nonprofit sector, social movements or the Wikimedia movement.
- Strong project management skills and a sharp attention to detail.
- Comfortable working remotely (outside of events and site visits) and managing multiple work streams.
- Positive attitude and tolerance of ambiguity when working with volunteers.
- Can communicate clearly with colleagues and external audiences.
- Ability to roll with the punches in an ever-shifting movement landscape.
- Must adhere to the Wikimedia Universal Code of Conduct.
