For over 50 years, the Association for Neighborhood & Housing Development (ANHD) has been one of NYC’s leading policy advocacy organizations on housing and economic development. We are a member association of 80+ neighborhood-based affordable housing and community development groups working to win affordable housing and thriving, equitable neighborhoods for all New Yorkers. Check out the team you would join here.

Join us and together we will Build. Community. Power.

ANHD is hiring for a Communications Manager to execute communications strategies, developing content to meet communications needs across the organization. The ideal candidate creates high-quality, creative, and compelling content for various audiences; is familiar with issues related to housing and economic justice, especially in NYC; and is deeply committed to racial equity, social justice, and values-based work.

    Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will join ANHD’s Operations team and will work closely with staff across the organization, including our Organizing & Advocacy, Policy, Research & Data, and Capacity Building & Technical Assistance teams. This position reports to the Associate Director of Communications.

    The Communications Manager will:

    • Develop and coordinate content for email, social media, web, and print assets, in support of ANHD’s advocacy and organizing campaigns, programs, publications, and general brand awareness.
      • This includes recurring email newsletters for our community development, organizer, member, and funder audiences.
    • Social media
      • Provide and/or coordinate social media coverage for events, actions, press events, and other public activities.
      • Monitor social media for opportunities to engage with relevant posts, accounts, conversations, and trends.
    • Translate (often very niche, technical, and/or “wonky”) information from subject matter experts into compelling and accessible content for various target audiences.
    • Collaborate with various staff members and consultants/contractors (e.g. graphic designers, photographers and videographers, web developers), as needed.
    • Adhere to organizational and campaign-specific voice, tone, messaging, and brand guidelines (some of which are still to be developed).
    • Uphold ethical storytelling practices, centering the people most impacted by our issues.
    • Work towards increasing online visibility and reach with target audiences.
    • Stay abreast of online best practices, and continue learning new skills and techniques.
    • Co-manage ANHD's content calendar with the Associate Director of Communications.
    • Support administrative tasks related to communications work, including tracking and reporting metrics and analytics.
    • Participate in various team and all-staff activities, including supporting meetings and events.

    Qualifications & Requirements:

The below qualifications describe the ideal candidate. We encourage you to apply if you don’t 100% meet them all, but think you might still be a good fit!

    Required:

    • At least 3 years of experience creating communications for nonprofit or other related organizations/institutions.
    • Proven ability to create high-quality, creative, and compelling written, visual, and video content to achieve measurable goals.
    • Strong visual eye, and at least 3 years of experience designing graphics for various types of assets.
    • Experience with design software, e.g., Adobe, Canva.
    • Experience with email management practices including list segmentation and hygiene; familiarity with email management systems e.g. Bloomerang, Mailchimp, or Constant Contact.
    • Experience with website management, especially in WordPress (with support from an external web development team).
    • Effective time-management skills and ability to manage competing priorities.
    • Experience working in multi-racial, multicultural settings, and deep commitment to racial equity, social justice, and values-based work.

    Preferred:

    • Passion for using communications to support movement work.
    • Familiarity with issues related to affordable housing, community development, land use, small business, industrial jobs, and/or responsible banking - especially in NYC.
    • Experience with community organizing and/or policy advocacy.
    • Familiarity and fluency with social media trends.
    • Experience using content scheduling tools like Buffer, Hootsuite, etc.
    • Direct communicator and collaborative problem-solver.
    • Interest and desire to learn and grow.

This is a hybrid position based in New York City. The employee is expected to work from ANHD’s lower Manhattan office twice a week, and work remotely three days a week, with occasional attendance at events and meetings at other locations throughout New York City.

The position regularly involves computer-based work, participation in virtual and in-person meetings, and review and production of digital and printed materials.

In connection with events and other organizational activities, the employee may occasionally assist with moving or transporting office supplies, event materials, or boxes weighing up to 25 pounds. ANHD provides reasonable accommodations to applicants and employees with disabilities in accordance with applicable law.

As an ANHD employee, you will enjoy a competitive compensation and benefits package.
