    Position Title: Flex Mechanic

    Position Type: Full-time or part-time, year-round, non-exempt

    Pay: $22.50-$26/hour depending on experience

    Schedule: This position is flexible for the person who is a great fit for the organization. If selected for the role, we will discuss a schedule that would range from 3-5 days per week (21-40 hrs/wk), as scheduled, within Tuesday - Saturday, hours ranging from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

    Location: Bikes Together Mariposa shop at 1060 Osage St, Denver, CO 80204, or at another nearby location in the Sun Valley neighborhood

    Start Date: Desired by June 2026, flexible for the right candidate

    Position’s Purpose: Refurbish bikes for sale & complete service jobs in the Service Department; Support retail sales and help customers and participants navigate the shop’s offerings; Represent the shop values & norms as part of the social enterprise bike shop

    About Bikes Together

    Bikes Together is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Denver, Colorado. Since 2008, we have promoted equitable access to bicycles and bike education through recycling, education programs, and a social enterprise bike shop. Our work centers education, access, and community care.

    Our team currently includes an Executive Director, Community Programs Director, Service + Operations Manager, Retail Lead, Retail Bike Mechanic, and several part-time and on-call staff. We work collaboratively with a strong education focus. Our board of directors includes long-time volunteers, mechanics, instructors, and community advocates, and is majority trans/women/intersex/genderqueer (TWIG), with 25% members of color.

    Position Overview

    The Flex Mechanic position will be filled by a skilled bike mechanic who is comfortable supporting the BT social enterprise bike shop in varied roles. They will work to produce exceptional quality refurbished bikes and mechanical services in our Service Department and provide retail sales and operation support in concert with our Retail Lead. The position may also support scrap recycling operations and inter-shop bike/parts transfers. The ideal candidate will be community-focused, experienced with bike repair and retail sales, and will represent BT’s values and advance BT’s mission to make bicycle transportation, recreation, and mechanics accessible to all.

    This position can optionally be part-time (at least 3 days / 21 hours per week) or full-time depending on applicant preference. Although initially this role will be a “utility” position, filling various jobs as needed during the shop’s Summer busy season, there is opportunity to take on a specialization towards the mechanic role as the position develops.

    The position is year-round and reports to the Service and Operations Manager.

    Job Duties:

    Service Responsibilities (40%)

    • Complete refurbishments of exceptional quality used retail bikes (functionally as good as new)
    • Service scheduled and same-day repairs, including tune-ups and a-la-carte repairs
    • Advise customers and staff on technical bike repair questions and recommend appropriate parts and services
    • Quote prices for repairs based on Service Department price structure and mechanical assessment of customer bikes
    • Write clear and concise work orders for repairs and keep detailed notes on services performed; communicate and hand-off service jobs effectively with other mechanics
    • Maintain a safe, clean, organized, well-stocked, and accessible service department in cooperation with Service and Operations Manager

    Retail Support Responsibilities (30%)

    • Sell used refurbished and as-is bikes, ranging in price from $20-$1000
    • Create welcoming and empowering experiences for a wide range of customers
    • Provide information about and sell a wide range of bike components, accessories, and used parts
    • Maintain inventory controls and check in purchase orders in cooperation with Retail Lead for Retail, Service and Programs operations
    • Assist Retail Lead with maintaining the retail space and with any additional tasks as directed by Retail Lead, including opening and closing the register, restocking inventory, and cleaning and maintaining the space and inventory

    General Shop Responsibilities (20%)

    • As a representative of BT for people visiting the shop:
      • Greet customers, volunteers, and program participants who call or come by
      • Answer general questions and direct people to appropriate staff or volunteers
      • Help manage flow of people in the shop
      • Provide kind, clear, boundaried customer service using a harm reduction approach
    • Help volunteers and program participants conform to shop cultural norms (strive to be feminist, anti-racist, cross-class, and learning-focused) and navigate potential conflict
    • Promote & explain our shop programs and mission to visitors; welcome people who are eligible for affinity- or identity-based programs like Gender Equality Mechanics
    • Collectively maintain clean & organized workspaces, storage areas, and bathrooms

    Organizational Responsibilities (10%)

    • Cover for co-workers in the shop as needed (for time off and absences)
    • Attend weekly or bi-weekly 1:1 meetings with supervisor and monthly Shop Operations Meetings
    • Participate in regular check-ins, annual self-evaluation, and individual goal-setting
    • Help identify areas for improvement and propose changes; contribute to the creation of annual budget, organizational goals and priorities, evaluations, and strategic planning, as needed

    Scrap & Transfer Responsibilities *** optional, depending on applicant *** (20%, replacing equivalent time in other duties)

    • Sort, transport, and deliver bikes & parts designated as scrap to the metal recycling center
    • Keep accurate records of scrap metal volume & revenue generated
    • Transfer bikes and parts between the BT Mariposa shop and off-site refurbishment center / warehouse
    • Safely operate the BT shop truck to accomplish the above tasks and facilitate truck fueling & maintenance

    Skills, Qualifications, and Experience:

    Required:

    1. Enthusiasm for and ability to create a welcoming, accessible bike culture
    2. Strong customer service skills and enthusiasm to get more people on bikes
    3. Intermediate bike mechanic experience (1+ year of experience required; professional experience preferred; amateur of volunteer experience will be considered)
    4. Existing intermediate bike technical knowledge and an interest in expanding knowledge and following industry trends
    5. Comfort in a retail sales environment selling refurbished (fixed price) and as-is cost-flexible bikes to community members
    6. De-escalation and conflict management skills and ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment
    7. Commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion; experience or ability to work with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultural identities, lived experiences, & economic means
    8. Ability to regularly lift up to 50 pounds and climb ladders

    Preferred:

    1. 1+ year of retail sales experience
    2. 2+ years of professional bike mechanic experience
    3. Current US driver license and ability to safely operate a full-size pickup truck
    4. Familiarity with Lightspeed POS and Google Suite
    5. Bilingual preferred but not required
