    About Flatbush Cats

Flatbush Cats is a Brooklyn-based nonprofit working to reduce overcrowded animal shelters in NYC. We do this by making veterinary care more affordable and accessible at our clinic, Flatbush Vet. What began as a grassroots rescue effort has grown into a citywide force for community-centered animal welfare, powered by the belief that New York City can do better for pets and the people who care for them.

We are entering a new phase of significant growth. We’re building the leadership, team, and infrastructure needed to significantly expand access to affordable veterinary care for more New Yorkers.

    About the Position

This is a career-defining opportunity to shape the marketing and communications strategy for a high-momentum nonprofit entering a major new chapter.

We’ve built a large, highly engaged audience through powerful storytelling, reaching several million cat lovers per month through organic social. You will help us set even higher goals, design the strategy, and use a broader tool set (including paid) to reach more people who would love to be a part of this work.

Reporting to the Executive Director, you will oversee an integrated team spanning brand, messaging, digital, paid / growth, editorial, and communications planning. You will recruit, manage and develop functional leads across growth marketing and editorial / communications.

This role is ideal for someone with experience building, testing + scaling impactful marketing and fundraising campaigns for a large or quickly growing nonprofit, with professional goals to expand their strategy + leadership capabilities.

    Why This Role is Different

This is not a traditional nonprofit communications position focused on press releases, galas, or basic newsletters (we don’t do those). It’s a senior leadership role for someone who understands how marketing, storytelling, and supporter journeys work together to build trust, deepen engagement, and move people to action.

The challenge isn't keeping the lights on or preparing a stale annual report. It’s growth: figuring out how to reach millions more people each month with amazing stories, and being willing to constantly test new approaches. You will be empowered to take risks, experiment, and scale what works.

Key Responsibilities: What You’ll Be Doing

    Integrated Marketing + Communications Strategy

    • Set and lead the overall marketing and communications strategy across paid, owned and earned media - you decide where to invest, what to test, and what success looks like.
    • Lead a significant branding and messaging evolution in partnership with senior leadership and external creative and strategy partners.
    • Partner with the Executive Director and senior leaders to align marketing and communications with programmatic, fundraising, advocacy, and organizational priorities.
    • Guide major organizational moments, campaigns, launches, partnerships, and public positioning opportunities.

Audience Growth, Digital Strategy + Supporter Engagement

    • Lead audience growth and supporter engagement across all channels, with a focus on digital.
    • Guide the strategy for moving people from awareness to deeper engagement, including email signup, advocacy participation, volunteer interest, and recurring support.
    • Partner with Development to strengthen digital fundraising funnels and performance.
    • Set the budget + measurement framework, and hold the team accountable to meeting goals.

    Brand, Editorial + Communications Leadership

    • Steward and evolve the Flatbush Cats voice so that communications are clear, compelling, and mission-centered across all channels.
    • Set strategic direction and quality standards for storytelling, editorial, content, campaigns, and high-visibility communications.
    • Partner with the Executive Director on leadership voice, public positioning, major announcements, thought leadership, and sensitive or high-visibility communications.
    • Manage and support editorial leadership to ensure story priorities, standards, and content strategy serve the organization’s broader goals.
    • Develop messaging and storytelling frameworks that reflect community-centered values, accuracy, dignity, trust, and respect for the people and pets at the heart of the mission.

    Team + Organizational Leadership

    • Build culture, set standards, and model behavior for a high performing team.
    • Hire, lead, and develop a growing marketing and communications team, including functional leadership across editorial, growth marketing, creative, digital, and project management.
    • Assign clear priorities, accountability, and decision-making authority to editorial and marketing/growth leads.
    • Oversee marketing and communications budgets, resource allocation, vendor relationships, and external partners.
    • Build strong working relationships across Development, Programs, Operations, and leadership to ensure communications are coordinated, accurate, and connected to organizational priorities.

    Qualifications

    Required

    • 8+ years of experience across nonprofit marketing, communications, or fundraising, with recent senior-level responsibility.

    • Experience supporting or leading a brand evolution, repositioning, major campaign, or organizational identity project.

    • Experience with email marketing platforms, CRM systems, analytics tools, and digital campaign reporting.
    • Background in digital media, journalism, growth marketing, advocacy communications, or creative production.
