    Jews United for Justice (JUFJ), along with our sister 501(c)4 organization, the JUFJ Campaign Fund, is seeking an experienced, senior level Chief Operating Officer to manage our operations and finance department, including evaluating, standardizing, and innovating on our existing way of doing things, ensuring that workflows are sustainable, and taking our organization to the next level. We are looking for a talented systems-thinker, who will play a leadership role in the organization and ensure that our finance, human resources, and operations functions are working at the highest level. This is a full-time, exempt, senior leadership position that currently manages two (2) staff members.

    Job Description:

    Executive/Internal Management

    • Serve as a member of the senior management team responsible for leading the organization.
    • Manage organization-wide processes and systems. Lead evaluation of existing systems and design and implementation of improvements.
    • Serve as a thought leader on long-term planning.
    • Manage key aspects of the Board of Directors, including board committees and reporting needs.

    Financial Management

    • Oversee JUFJ’s daily financial operations and supervise the internal finance management and external outsourced accountant. This includes managing the finance staff responsible for cash, bank, accounts receivable, and account payable processes and coordination with the development department to ensure revenue is organized and compliant with all grant, funder, and contract requirements.
    • Develop, maintain, and enhance financial management systems, processes, and policies.
    • Manage staff and outsourced accountants to produce monthly financial reporting for leadership and staff, acting as the primary reviewer on a variety of reports to ensure accuracy and quality, including budget and cash trackers.
    • Lead the annual financial audit and ensure accurate and timely IRS 990 filings.
    • Manage the annual budgeting process, leading on forecasting, planning and analysis to ensure organizational goals are achieved in a fiscal and compliant manner.
    • Ensure compliance in managing the relationship between JUFJ and the JUFJ Campaign Fund.

    People & Operations Management

    • Build, improve, and implement core systems, policies, and procedures, including but not limited to human resources, people and culture, organizational management, performance evaluations, and governance.
    • Supervise and support Operations and Finance team members, including providing coaching, mentorship, and accountability.
    • Ensure that routine procedures are accurate and working smoothly, including payroll, benefits, tracking leaves, employment records, and other internal systems.
    • Manage organization-wide annual performance review process, including improving evaluation instruments, providing support for staff, and ensuring accountability for staff performance.
    • Serve as the point of contact for all grievances and disciplinary procedures/actions.
    • Manage the implementation of the JUFJ/Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU) Collective Bargaining Agreement.
    • Oversee organization-wide hiring processes, including but not limited to, assisting hiring managers with job postings and interview planning.

    Administration | Compliance & Security

    • Lead risk management for the organization, including reporting and insurance.
    • Support annual state filings to maintain organizational compliance including the following: employment, business, and tax registrations.
    • Oversee and monitor c4 staff and overhead allocations, including monthly invoicing and payment.
    • Oversee cybersecurity and IT systems to ensure staff has the necessary technology, training, and policies in place to protect our information and reputation.

    Qualifications

    We’re seeking candidates who are terrific interpersonal communicators, can look at a process and see the system that will enable or sustain success, love numbers and keeping track of all the details, and have particular strengths in the following areas:

    • Leadership & Management Skills: A demonstrated ability to connect with, motivate, and mobilize other people to solve problems and move an organization forward. Can make tough judgement calls when there isn’t consensus. A minimum of 5 years of management experience, with a preference for experience managing unionized staff.
    • High level of emotional intelligence and interpersonal communication skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated success in building trust with staff at all levels of an organization.
    • Financial Expertise: Experience being the final reviewer for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting and audit coordination for either a division or significant program area. Ability to communicate financial concepts to, and effectively collaborate with, programmatic and fundraising colleagues who do not have finance backgrounds.
    • HR Expertise: Experience managing an HR function including hiring, preferably in a non-profit capacity. This position involves access to and sensitive use of confidential information. Candidates should have exceptional integrity and discretion to compartmentalize confidential information.
    • Detail Oriented: Is highly organized, with strong attention to detail — ensures that even the small things are correct.
    • Team Oriented: Enjoys working with people and leading a team to achieve its goals. Builds understanding around the processes they manage, and the team trusts that these processes maximize the work. Candidates should have a sense of humor, low ego, and a genuine commitment to working in a collaborative team setting.
    • Project Management Skills: Has excellent planning, delegation, and problem-solving skills and a strong sense of ownership over tasks, including follow-through. Willing to be persistent and do what it takes to get the job done. Able to effectively prioritize when faced with competing deadlines.
    • Belief in Mission: Actively demonstrates commitment to the mission of Jews United for Justice.

    This is a full-time position based out of JUFJ’s Washington, DC office; the chosen candidate may have the option to work out of our Baltimore, MD office 2-3 days a week with supervisor approval.
