About Geeking Out Kids of Color (GOKiC)

Geeking Out Kids of Color (GOKiC) is a BIPOC-led nonprofit organization dedicated to liberating BIPOC youth through technology, education, and mentorship. We build and sustain youth programs rooted in community, computer science, and consciousness, creating opportunities for young people to develop digital literacy, leadership, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

Our project-based technology curricula integrate computer science and emerging technologies with anti-racism, anti-sexism, multiculturalism, social-emotional learning, and decolonization frameworks. Through hands-on learning, mentorship, and connections with BIPOC professionals and community members, we create culturally responsive spaces where young people can explore technology, strengthen their identities, build community, and envision new possibilities for themselves and their futures.

Job Summary

The Educator plays a key role in advancing Geeking Out Kids of Color’s (GOKiC) mission to liberate BIPOC youth through technology and mentorship by developing and delivering culturally responsive, decolonized technology education programs.

This role combines direct teaching with curriculum development, youth and family engagement, and relationship-building with community partners. Educators lead project-based technology and computer science learning experiences, develop and adapt curriculum, support student growth, and help create engaging learning environments where young people feel safe, supported, and empowered.

Ongoing learning and professional development are an important part of the role, with opportunities to strengthen teaching practices, technology skills, curriculum development, and youth-development expertise.

This is a part-time, 26-hour-per-week position supporting GOKiC programming across South King County, including White Center, Burien, and SeaTac. The role provides hands-on experience in technology education, curriculum development, and youth mentorship, along with opportunities for continued professional growth and development as an educator.

Essential Functions

The responsibilities below represent an approximate breakdown of how time may be allocated throughout the role. Responsibilities may shift based on the program calendar and student needs. For example, curriculum development and preparation may increase during school breaks when students are not in session.

Teaching & Program Delivery | Approximately 45%

• Prepare for and facilitate in-person classroom activities.
• Lead students through project-based technology and computer science activities, providing structure and pacing that supports varying learning needs and abilities.
• Create and maintain a positive, engaging, inclusive, and productive classroom environment.
• Support classroom management and student engagement.
• Track student attendance and identify participation or attendance trends over time.
• Provide feedback and evaluation related to individual student growth, participation, and progress.
• Reflect on classroom sessions to identify successes, challenges, and opportunities for continued improvement.
• Communicate and collaborate with program-site partners to ensure alignment and support successful programming.

Curriculum Development & Preparation | Approximately 40%

• Collaborate with the curriculum team and fellow educators to develop, create, and adapt curriculum for upcoming program sessions.
• Test and refine curriculum to support quality, engagement, accessibility, and student enjoyment.
• Scaffold lessons and activities to meet different student learning needs and educational goals.
• Develop and adapt curriculum materials, including lesson plans, presentations, activities, and supporting resources.
• Maintain organized and up-to-date curriculum materials in Google Drive in accordance with GOKiC's file organization and program standards.
• Develop and submit curriculum supply and food lists in preparation for each program quarter.
• Collaborate with other educators to continuously strengthen GOKiC's technology education programming.

Youth & Family Engagement | Approximately 5%

• Support student recruitment and retention efforts.
• Build positive relationships with participating youth and families and foster a sense of belonging within GOKiC programs.
• Build and maintain relationships with school and community partners to support student and program success.
• Help showcase program successes through events, communications, program highlights, and other engagement opportunities.
• Communicate regularly and professionally with youth, families, partners, and other key program stakeholders.

Professional Development | Approximately 5%

• Participate in relevant trainings, workshops, conferences, and professional development opportunities.
• Participate in networking and learning opportunities with peer organizations and community partners.
• Engage with readings, resources, and self-directed learning connected to GOKiC's mission, technology education, youth development, and teaching practices.
• Participate in GOKiC's Growth and Empowerment Process to support continued professional development and self-reflection.

Administrative & Team Coordination | Approximately 5%

• Respond to work-related communications in a timely and professional manner.
• Participate in applicable all-staff meetings, site huddles, supervisor check-ins, and other team meetings.
• Complete and submit required weekly check-ins and other program documentation.
• Support documentation and sharing of program highlights, student engagement, and program impact.
• Submit program-related expenses and required documentation in a timely manner and in alignment with organizational budget guidelines.
• Maintain organized program records and communications necessary to support successful program delivery.

Qualifications

• Experience or strong interest in working with multicultural youth in educational, after-school, or community-based settings.
• Interest and experience in teaching computer science, coding, and/or technology; basic computing and coding knowledge is expected.
• Foundational understanding of teaching strategies, classroom management, youth development, and social-emotional learning.
• Basic understanding of child and adolescent development, including student engagement, attention, repetition, and different learning needs.
• Basic knowledge of critical race theory and the ability to introduce equity-based concepts to youth in developmentally appropriate ways.
• Strong cultural competency and awareness of one's positionality within educational spaces.
• Commitment to creating culturally responsive, inclusive, affirming, and bias-free learning environments.
• Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with youth, families, community partners, and team members.
• Strong organizational and project-management skills, including planning, goal-setting, meeting deadlines, and following through on responsibilities.
• Adaptability and flexibility, with the ability to balance teaching, curriculum development, youth engagement, and administrative responsibilities.
• Ability to navigate conflict professionally and communicate concerns with appropriate team members.
• Ability to support student recruitment and engagement efforts.
• Competency using PCs, Microsoft Office, Google Drive, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and other common digital tools.
• Ability to successfully complete required background checks.
• Multilingual skills, particularly Spanish, are a plus.

Schedule & Working Conditions

This is a part-time position scheduled for 26 hours per week supporting GOKiC programming across South King County, WA, including program sites in White Center, Burien, and SeaTac.

• Availability is generally required Monday–Friday between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM, with the majority of direct programming occurring between approximately 2:00–7:00 PM.
• The specific weekly schedule will be based on assigned program days, curriculum preparation, meetings, and other program responsibilities.
• Occasional evening or weekend availability may be required for meetings, events, showcases, or other program activities.
• This role requires regular in-person participation at assigned program sites, with some administrative, curriculum, or professional development activities potentially completed remotely.
• Reliable and independent transportation is required.
• Must be willing and able to travel within the Greater Seattle area as necessary to meet in-person program requirements. Travel needs may vary depending on assigned partner sites.
• Must have a strong interest in working with multicultural youth who may experience intersecting barriers to success.
• Must be able to collaborate with and take direction from experienced team members and effectively implement curriculum and program expectations.
• Must be committed to maintaining an environment where youth and staff feel safe, supported, respected, and encouraged.
• Team members are expected to responsibly care for organizational equipment issued for their role.
• Must be able to lift and transport program materials and equipment, including laptops, robots, binders, and similar supplies.

Collaboration & Support

This is not a formal managerial role. However, the Educator may provide day-to-day program guidance to Assistant Educators, volunteers, or other support staff assigned to their program.

When working with additional program staff, the Educator is expected to provide clear direction, guidance, and feedback; collaborate effectively; and help ensure successful programming and a positive learning environment for students.

Compensation & Benefits

Pay Range: $26.00–$29.25 per hour

This role combines remote work with regular in-person programming and travel within the service delivery area. Team members work remotely when appropriate and participate in in-person programming, meetings, events, and other activities based on the responsibilities of their role.
