    Descrição

    The National Association of Consumer Advocates (NACA) seeks a proactive, motivated, and creative attorney to join the organization as a Litigation Associate. Working under NACA’s Litigation Director, the Litigation Associate will work together with NACA staff and external private and legal aid lawyers to develop and implement litigation strategies, including co-counseling impact cases, targeted amicus briefs, and representative actions, that advance the interests of consumers and consumer advocates.

    Duties:

    • Support litigation efforts focused on significant and innovative lawsuits that effectively promote consumer justice and create new opportunities for private and public consumer attorneys.
    • Draft memoranda, pleadings, briefs, and other legal documents, including written discovery.
    • Work in collaboration with the Litigation Director to develop and execute litigation priorities and participate in all phases of the litigation process.
    • Participate in efforts to seek out and cultivate co-counseling relationships with NACA members on ongoing and prospective litigation.
    • Track and monitor important consumer protection litigation.
    • Collaborate with attorneys outside of NACA in matters where NACA’s involvement can positively impact consumer law.
    • Work with NACA members on amicus briefs that support the work of consumer attorneys in federal and state courts.
    • Present at workshops, conferences, webinars and other training sessions for consumer lawyers.
    • Support NACA’s broader advocacy projects, primarily on issues that impact effective litigation including court reform, forced arbitration, and limitations on attorney fees.
    • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Litigation Director and/or Executive Director.

    Qualifications

    • Law degree and admission to the bar in at least one state.
    • At least 2-5 years of litigation experience in consumer cases or closely related public interest cases.
    • Demonstrated litigation experience in both state and federal courts, including familiarity with appellate practice.
    • Outstanding writing, analytical, and litigation skills, including a demonstrated ability to analyze and write about complex legal issues.
    • Consumer law expertise preferred.
    • A demonstrated commitment to advocating for the public interest and consumer rights.
    • The ability to think creatively, be strategic, collaborate with other attorneys in our community, and exercise good judgment.
    • The ability to work independently and as part of a team.

    Compensation

    Competitive salary depends on experience (salary range starts at $110,000) and a benefits package that includes employer-paid medical insurance; employer-subsidized family health coverage; generous paid time off; employer-paid life and long-term disability insurance; and a 401k Retirement Plan.

    Location

    NACA is headquartered in Washington, D.C. and would prefer to hire a person in the D.C. metropolitan area. However, NACA is open to filling this position with the right candidate wherever they may reside in the United States.
