ABOUT THE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF MANHATTAN

The Children’s Museum of Manhattan (CMOM) is a steward of early childhood, helping all children grow and develop into their best selves. Through our programs on-site, online, and around the five boroughs, CMOM nurtures the next generation of creative global citizens as they learn through exploration and play. Our offerings embrace the intersection of the arts, sciences, and humanities and include exhibitions, classes, workshops, performances, and festivals. Our programs and exhibits are designed to address the multiple ways children learn and to help parents understand and support their children’s development. CMOM’s special areas of focus include early childhood education, creativity, health, and world cultures. The museum’s programming reflects the rich cultural diversity, energy, and resilience of New York City itself and we aim to ensure our programs are available to those families who might not otherwise have access.

Founded in 1973 as a neighborhood organization, CMOM has grown over the years into a beloved destination and resource for children, families, and educators from across the five boroughs and from around the world. The museum welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to its Upper West Side location and engages hundreds of thousands more through its outreach programs in partnership with schools, libraries, shelters, and Head Start centers throughout New York City; its touring exhibitions; and its online tools and curricula.

CMOM is actively engaged in a major capital campaign aimed at securing the resources necessary for its transformative expansion and future sustainability.

    ABOUT THE POSITION

CMOM is hiring an Institutional Giving Director to lead the museum’s foundation, corporate, and government fundraising. The Institutional Giving Director will be a key leader in the department, responsible for designing and implementing comprehensive strategies to cultivate, solicit, and steward relationships with institutional donors, ultimately driving increased financial support for both the capital campaign and annual fund. A successful candidate will be a seasoned fundraising professional with a proven ability to cultivate relationships and secure major gifts. They will possess a strategic mindset and the ability to translate organizational goals and programmatic activity into actionable fundraising strategies. Knowledge of the early childhood philanthropic landscape is preferred. The Institutional Giving Director reports directly to the Chief Advancement Officer and will supervise other team members. The Director regularly interfaces with CMOM’s board and leadership team.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    Strategy and Solicitation

    • Establish, develop, and execute multi-year institutional fundraising goals and strategies in partnership with Chief Advancement Officer and Director of Development, aligning with organizational objectives, annual fund, and the capital campaign.
    • Maintain and grow a robust portfolio of institutional funders, cultivating relationships and stewarding existing partners while identifying new opportunities for support, ensuring strong relationships, long-term engagement, and authentic connection to CMOM.
    • Oversee prospect research to identify new institutional giving opportunities.
    • Lead the full lifecycle of institutional fundraising efforts—prospecting, proposal writing, monitoring deadlines, compliance, outcome tracking, and reporting.
    • Identify new opportunities for support and support ongoing donor recognition and stewardship efforts.
    • Establish and maintain relationships between institutional funders and the Executive Director, Chief Advancement Officer, and other organizational stakeholders.

    Grant Writing and Reporting

    • Conceptualize and write compelling case statements and proposals for institutional funders, including complex proposals that require working closely with program staff.
    • Ensure all application materials (e.g. narrative and attachments) are of the highest quality and all deadlines are met.
    • Generate accurate and timely responses for all due diligence requests and/or grant reports during and after the grant agreement.
    • Maintain the highest levels of accountability and compliance standards for donors and funding sources.

    Management and Cross-Departmental Collaboration

    • Collaborate with program, finance, and executive teams on budget documents, outcome measurement, and funder communications.
    • Provide strategic direction, guidance, and mentorship to Institutional Giving team members, fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment.
    • Provide regular updates and reports to leadership and the board on institutional giving progress, successes, and challenges.

    Other

    • Utilize donor database (Raiser’s Edge) to track interactions, update lists, manage relationships and gifts, and analyze metrics to inform decision-making.
    • Develop and maintain a comprehensive tracking system for granting schedule.
    • Stay informed about trends and best practices in institutional giving and philanthropy and proactively adapt strategies to maximize fundraising effectiveness.
    • Represent the organization at events, meetings, and other networking opportunities.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • A commitment for the mission of CMOM and a collaborative, creative, and entrepreneurial spirit.
    • Deep knowledge of the philanthropic landscapes in New York City with a focus on early childhood development and arts and culture preferred.
    • 7+ years of demonstrated success in leading institutional fundraising efforts and supporting capital campaigns preferred.
    • Track record of independently managing a portfolio of external relationships and building meaningful and complex partnerships.
    • Excellent written communication skills and direct grant writing experience, with a track record of securing six- and seven-figure gifts.
    • Strong strategic thinking and planning skills, with the ability to develop and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies.
    • Demonstrated leadership ability, with experience managing and motivating junior and senior staff involved in fundraising activities.
    • Experience with donor management software (Raiser’s Edge preferred), database systems, and other fundraising tools.
    • An ability to handle pressure with equanimity and to thrive in an entrepreneurial, and accountability-focused organization; a roll-up-your-sleeves attitude.
    • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed for event coverage.
