About This Role
The Literacy Tutor (PT, Temporary) will provide targeted reading intervention and literacy support to students in grades K-5 both using a culturally responsive and strength-based approach in Masa’s Literacy Program and Afterschool program. At Masa's afterschool program, tutors will implement push-in literacy lessons that may include social justice topics, such as, immigrant rights, indigenous rights, LGBTQIA rights, and topics centering historically marginalized communities. This is an ideal position for someone who has prior experience working with children, is passionate about literacy, is comfortable discussing social justice topics, is patient, encouraging, and reliable and is committed to helping young learners gain literacy skills to become confident readers. This is a part time position (10-12 hours a week) with availability required Monday-Thursday between the hours of 2 pm and 7 pm. We anticipate that this position will run through March 30, 2027, with a possible extension until June 15, 2027.
Core Responsibilities
- Complete literacy training to be able to effectively engage with and support students who are reading below grade level
- Provide targeted reading intervention to individual students or small groups of students based on students’ literacy needs
- Support and implement push-in literacy lessons in Masa’s after school program
- Collaborate with Literacy Specialist to advance instructional practices and deliver high-quality tutoring
- Encourage and motivate struggling readers as they develop their skills
- Create a positive, supportive, and engaging learning environment
- Monitor student progress and provide meaningful feedback and reports to staff
- Use student progress to guide future lesson planning
- Help students build confidence and develop a love of reading
- Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and flexibility while supporting student success
Required Qualifications
- 18+ years of age
- Some college completed (can be currently attending or have attended in the past)
- High School and/or College GPA of B+ (3.3) / 87%-89% or higher, especially in ELA and/or English courses
- Passionate about literacy and supporting children to build their literacy skills
- Prior experience working with students, especially in elementary-aged children
- Capable of utilizing and changing approach as necessary to ensure student engagement and learning
- Highly detail-oriented, organized, and self-managing; able to work independently
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Driven and flexible; willing to jump in and help whenever and wherever needed
- Willingness to complete a comprehensive background check
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous tutoring experience, particularly in literacy/reading support a major plus
- Knowledge of or prior training on the Science of Reading and strategies a major plus
- Experience working with immigrant children and families and/or English Language Learners a major plus
Physical demands
- This position is in-person at Masa’s office.
- Light to moderate lifting and carrying of office materials is required
