    Position Summary

    The Staff Accountant is responsible for all transactional accounting, monthly closing cycle and assisting with the successful completion of the annual audit. Maintain the integrity of all accounting and reporting systems ensuring compliance with Federal regulatory requirements and GAAP for non-profits. The position reports directly to Chief Financial Officer.

    Essential Responsibilities

    • Prepares and posts advances, prepaid, depreciation, overhead allocation, and other transactional journal entries to the general ledger
    • Leads month-end and year-end close process in collaboration with the CFO
    • Reviews and approves all facility-related vendor invoices
    • Reconciles all Balance Sheet accounts on a quarterly basis
    • Prepares the monthly bank entry and reconciles the operating and payroll accounts to the general ledger on a monthly basis
    • Collects and records expenses charged to credit cards (Amex, VISA, Amazon) and reconciles monthly statements
    • Monitors activity and reconcile other general ledger accounts as per direction from the CFO
    • Coordinates with development staff on cash receipts generated from fundraising/donor related gifts/events and reconciles monthly activity
    • Records investment activity in general ledger for investment accounts
    • Processes semi-monthly transfer of funds to 403(b) and health saving account administrators
    • Maintains accurate fixed asset schedule and prepares monthly depreciation/accumulated depreciation entries
    • Records in-kind contributions
    • Assists with the annual audit and provides support schedules/reports
    • Assures accurate filing of all credit card and accounts payable invoices
    • Reviews positive pay exception reports for operating account on a daily basis
    • Additional duties as assigned

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration
    • Intermediate proficiency in Excel
    • Strong quantitative and detail-oriented skills
    • Exceptional organizational skills
    • Strong written and verbal communications and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to solve problems and prioritize work
    • Ability to perform work with minimum supervision and determine when to refer issues and/or problems to supervisor
    • Ability to exercise judgement and discretion in all presentations/correspondence and communication with staff and senior management

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Advanced proficiency in Excel
    • Prior public accounting experience
    • Prior experience working in nonprofit settings
    • Familiarity with Blackbaud software systems and/or non-profit accounting software systems and other report generating software
    • Demonstrated commitment to advancing educational achievement, lifelong learning, and positive social development for children, teens, and adults.

    Physical Requirements:

    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be mobile in an office environment and able to use standard office equipment
    • Must be able to communicate in verbal and written form
    • Must be able to provide in-person services at business headquarters
    • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds

    Location:

    • Candidate must live within driving distance of our headquarters in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia

    Salary:

    • The range for this position is $60,000-$68,000 per year and is commensurate with experience
