Community Power Fellowship: Nonprofit Leadership and Finance Fellow

Community Voices Heard is a member-led organization of low-income New Yorkers, led by and centering Black and brown women. Since 1994, our members have won on public housing, welfare reform, jobs, and participatory democracy by organizing the people closest to the problem. We organize statewide for working democracy, economic power, and housing justice, because when conditions change for Black and brown women, they change for everyone. Our vision is a New York where the people who live it hold the power to change it.

CVH is hiring Community Power Fellows to carry out research projects that directly feed our campaigns. This fellowship is built for CVH members, community leaders, graduate students, and people with deep lived experience of the issues we organize around. The tenant leader. The parent advocate. The returning citizen. The person who has been in the fight and is ready to shape strategy.

Fellows own a project from question to product. You will produce research that members, staff, and elected officials actually use.

Nonprofit Leadership and Finance Fellow: This is not a typical internship. It's a longer-term role for someone who wants to build the financial backbone of a member-led social justice organization and learn how one is led from the inside.

You'll work directly with senior leadership on financial modeling, dashboards, and board materials, while seeing up close how strategy, governance, and organizing fit together. A good fit if you're headed toward nonprofit leadership or mission-driven finance.

What You'll Do

Financial modeling

• Build and maintain multi-year financial models and scenario projections
• Support annual budgeting and mid-year reforecasting
• Analyze program and department costs to guide spending decisions
• Model the financial impact of new grants, campaigns, and hires

Dashboards and reporting

• Maintain and refine CVH's organizational metrics dashboard
• Build a finance dashboard tracking budget performance, cash position, and grant spending
• Turn financial data into plain-language reporting non-finance staff can actually use

Board materials

• Prepare financial packets, narratives, and presentations for the board and its committees

Leadership development

• Sit in on senior leadership meetings and organizational planning
• Take on special projects across finance, operations, and strategy
• Spend time with our organizing work and membership so the numbers stay connected to the mission

Who You Are

Required

• Experience building financial models and projections in Excel or Google Sheets
• Able to turn data into clear recommendations for people who aren't finance people
• Strong writing, especially for executive and board audiences
• Discretion and good judgment with confidential information
• Committed to racial, social, and economic justice and to member-led organizing

Preferred

• Graduate coursework or degree in public administration, business, policy, or finance
• Nonprofit experience, especially with grant budgeting or restricted funds
• Familiarity with dashboard or data visualization tools
• Lived experience in the communities CVH organizes with is a real asset

This role involves regular access to confidential organizational financial information. The Fellow will sign and follow CVH's confidentiality agreement as a condition of the fellowship.
