Village Education Programme in Tanzania — Art in Tanzania
What is it? The Village Education Programme places international students and volunteers as teachers in Tanzanian village schools — nurseries, primary and secondary schools, and adult vocational centres serving underserved communities. It covers core subject teaching, inclusive education, teacher training, and health advocacy. It is run by Art in Tanzania (AIT), a community development NGO founded in 1996 as part of the Children's Agenda.
Where? Village schools and communities around Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
How long? Flexible — the programme runs continuously year-round, with duration adjustable to your academic schedule and goals.
Working hours? 6–8 hours per day, Monday to Friday.

Where does the programme place you?
The Education Programme is part of the Children's Agenda — a structured approach to child development implemented by a coalition that includes UNICEF and Save the Children. Placements span village nurseries, primary and secondary schools, and adult vocational training programmes for women, and participants are placed specifically where schools are weakest, making your contribution targeted and high-impact from day one.
What does the Village Education Programme involve?
Your work centres on teaching — not observing — across several areas:
- Core subject teaching — supporting classroom learning where schools need the most help: English (including popular debate-based English training), mathematics, arts and music, and sports and physical education.
- Inclusive education — teaching and supporting children living with disabilities, a group often excluded from mainstream classrooms and for whom dedicated attention makes a transformative difference.
- Teacher training — working alongside Tanzanian teachers to share approaches, model techniques, and contribute to professional development that outlasts your placement.
- Health and advocacy — running awareness sessions on HIV/AIDS, health, and hygiene in schools and communities — education that directly saves lives.
- Adult vocational training — supporting vocational education for women in adult training centres, developing English, IT, entrepreneurship, and other skills that build economic independence.
- Visibility and social media — documenting classroom activities, teacher training, and milestones for AIT's channels, reaching over 50,000 Facebook followers and advocating for access to education.
What are the classroom conditions like?
Classroom tools are scarce, class sizes can exceed 40 pupils, and resources that teachers in Finland or Germany take for granted do not exist here. That constraint is the point: learning to teach effectively with limited resources in a cross-cultural environment under real conditions is one of the most valuable professional experiences you can have.
How does the placement work?
Academic-level team leaders supervise your placement daily, and a weekly planning and reporting system keeps your work structured, purposeful, and aligned with your study programme. Your placement is fully tailored to your academic background, teaching experience, and interests. Education, early childhood development, special needs education, public health, sports science, arts, and music are all well-suited — as is any student with a genuine commitment to teaching and community development.

Airport transfers from and to EUR 120 are a personal expense.
The charity visa for immigration is USD 50 and is a personal expense. A visa with multiple entries of less than 12 months is $250.
We pay you a USD 50 per month stipend. It is small, but equivalent to twice Tanzania's national minimum wage. The minimum participation time for assistance is four weeks.
Flights are a personal expense.
Local transportation in Tanzania is a personal expense, but it is small if needed.
