The aim for all activities at Chumkriel Language School is to provide quality education and life to the Community. We want to raise healthy, happy, self-confident members of the community.

Our History:

Chumkriel Language School (CLS) began operating in October 2005. The director Mr Nget Sothy, a Khmer teacher, established the school after recognising a need for language education in the community.

CLS offers a variety of education programs and support to the people of Chumkriel and surrounding rural communities. It’s main aim is to improve future opportunities, thought across to quality education and programs that promote improved life skills.

CLS is located in the Chumkriel community of Kampot province. There are four villages in Chumkriel community, having over 955 families. Many families are rice farmers and only make enough money to send their children to school for the first two years of primary school. 60% of the families do not have access to the clean and reliable water source. Many homes do not have toilet. Children from some families are without motors and bicycles and may walk up to an hour to get to school.

CLS is a Community Based Organization ( a smaller scale NGO). Since it expansions, CLS also focused on providing development initiatives to improve the living standard of its local people by introducing community based programs, whilst continuing to maintain and enhance student education opportunity.

CLS wants to help improve the quality of life in the community.

Chumkriel Language School aims to enable the community to gain better educational, health and employment outcomes by fostering life skills, professional skills, the teaching of English, and by providing support and encouragement to families.

The children of Chumkriel must receive quality education, health , life skill and learn English at an early age or they will be at a disadvantage later in life when competing for jobs in the larger cities.

Chumkriel Language School provide important life skills to the children of Chumkriel so they will grow up to be self-confident, proud and caring members of society.

The English Program:

Chumkriel Language School (CLS) operates Monday to Friday.

CLS runs English classes from 5pm to 7pm

Chumkriel Learning Centre (CLC) is open from 8am to 11am and 2pm to 5pm

Chumkriel Language School (CLS) runs beginner to advanced evening English classes. The school’s only agenda is to help improve the futures of Cambodian children through access to quality education. CLS has an active Volunteer Program which allows students to practice their English pronunciation, conversation, and listening skills. The interaction with English speaking volunteers adds a real excitement to their learning.

Chumkriel Language School (CLS) also operates the Chumkriel Learning Centre (CLC). CLC offers free educational resources and services to the Chumkriel Community. CLC runs a library program, reading program, hygiene program, health program and a variety of other educational activities which are all designed to supplement the traditional State School education.

The Chumkriel Learning Centre (CLC) building is on the grounds of the Chumkriel Primary and Secondary School, the community’s State School (this means it is a public school funded and run by the government). CLS and the State School enjoy a mutually beneficial relationship. The CLC students and many CLS English class students attend this State School.
