Sobre Nós

Red Hen Press has served both local and national communities as Southern California's largest nonprofit literary publisher for twenty-five years. Our mission is to discover works of literary excellence, support diversity, and promote literacy in our local schools. The press currently maintains five unique programs:

  • Publishing: The annual release of approximately twenty-five books of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, with over 400 books released to date and distributed internationally. Notable releases include works by Eloise Klein Healy, inaugural L.A. Poet Laureate, and the Poets Laureate of Colorado, Missouri, Alaska, Utah, and West Virginia.
  • Literary Events: Nearly thirty readings held annually, at a variety of venues in the Greater Los Angeles Area and New York City, featuring both acclaimed and emerging writers from throughout the U.S. These events are either free or low-cost and average 1,000 audience members yearly.
  • Writing in the Schools (WITS): Founded in 2003, this literary education program has served over 4,000 underprivileged students by placing published authors into fourth through twelfth grade classrooms at underserved schools to conduct creative writing workshops and provide free books to students.
  • The Los Angeles ReviewAn online literary journal publishing emerging authors and excellent works of poetry, short fiction, and nonfiction from throughout the country.
  • Literary Awards: Red Hen proudly presents ten awards (totaling $12,000) each year to emerging writers.

Our authors' works and experiences vary widely in terms of race, nationality, gender, age, sexuality, and ethnicity, and we believe our readership mirrors this diversity. For more information, please visit https://redhen.org.
