Missão
WEAD is a network of feminist eco-artists, educators, curators, and writers working toward the goal of a just and healthy world. We focus on women’s unique perspectives in ecological and social justice art. WEAD's website (weadartists.org) that serves as a virtual gallery of eco-artists work, connects artists and curators with exhibition opportunities, and educates and enlightens through WEAD Magazine.

In 1996 Jo Hanson, Susan Leibovitz Steinman and Estelle Akamine created WEAD in response to increasing requests for artist referrals and for designing ecoart exhibits and programs. Word-of-mouth networking started via WEAD's presentation that March at the Regional N. CA. Women’s Caucus for the Arts. From 1996 to 2004, WEAD's directory was published annually. Editions were labor intensive cut-and-paste, xerox editions. Today, more than 600 artists have portfolios on our website, which serves as a historical repository of the social justice and eco art.
WEAD does not proscribe to a single definition for ecofeminism or ecoart, nor one set of cultural, political, or social beliefs. Instead, WEAD celebrates a spectrum of differences under the colorful collective umbrella called ecofeminist art.
WEAD hosts member exhibitions, online and in galleries, throughout the year, with published catalogs and accompanying artist talks. We also facilitate online educational events, recordings of which are available on our website, and in-person, hands-on workshops. Each year, we publish WEAD Magazine, which provides insights into artist's processes in the context of art history, ecology and social justice.
