SESURUDEV NGO IS A NONPROFIT WELFARE ORGANISATION CONCERNED WITH SUSTAINABLE RURAL DEVELOPMENT AND THE URBAN JOBLESS POOR. We also take active part in advocacy on topics concerning poverty, global warming, hunger, good governance, rural development and employment for the poor be it in rural or urban areas. We prosecute this advocacy by issuing PRESS RELEASES which are sent through the Internet worldwide to a majority of Parastatal Institutions, International Organisations and NGOs. We call for the solidarity of the rich towards the poor in this our global village,PLANET EARTH. Self-Supporting Rural Development Association, (SESURUDEV), P.O.Box 31225, Yaounde, Cameroon was created in 1997 by the founder Mr. Aloysius Njie Ajua who, after reading through the Declarations and Resolutions of the 1996 World Food Summit of Rome was profoundly touched. Others having the concern for the masses suffering from abject poverty (in the midst of plentiful natural resources), unemployment and malnutrition were convinced to join the movement.
SESURUDEV is a non-profit, non-governmental, apolitical welfare association or movement concerned with sustainable rural development and the urban jobless poor. SESURUDEV strives to bring practical solutions to raise the standard of living of the poor wherever they live in a manner that makes a very great impact (i.e. to positively affect many millions of people) and in a sustainable manner. That is why we usually recommend mixed farming wherever there is available land. We believe in the Chinese proverb which says it is better to teach a person to catch a fish everyday instead of giving him a fish every day.
SESURUDEV was registered as an Association, Ref. No. E30/201/336 of 14th February, 1997. As clearly spelt out in the Articles of Association, it has the following domains of activity:
Ø Provide simplified, practical agriculture, livestock and pisciculture training to farmers or would-be farmers on modern techniques to increase production and productivity.
Ø Back-up services and follow-up contacts to individual and group farmers with emphasis on the practice of mixed farming.
Ø Within the technical assistance programme of SESURUDEV, to provide or assist farmers to gain access to improved livestock breeds, animal drugs, improved seed varieties, organic fertilizers and other in-puts.
Ø Organizing talks, work-shops and seminars on agriculture, livestock and pisciculture production.
Ø Involvement in agro-forestry, ecosystem conservation and environmental protection.
Ø Engage in integrated rural development.
Ø Concern with food security, post-harvest and food storage protection, measures against hunger, malnutrition and poverty.
SESURUDEV CRASH COURSES
Five good years have passed since SESURUDEV have been organizing, (without any external funding whatsoever) crash courses on Poultry production and marketing, Intensive pig production, Rabbit production, Beef cattle production, Dairy cattle production, Sheep and Goats production, Soil science, natural and chemical fertilizers, etc. We must thank the almighty God for that. Our courses last for just three full days i.e. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and anybody of either sex, age or qualification can attend because we have a zero discrimination policy. Most of the courses are held in Bamenda but we have also held many courses in Buea and Kumba. At the end of each training session, all the trainees write their evaluation and comments which are all found in our website. The last crash course within the past five years will be on Intensive Pig production. It will be held in Bamenda starting on 17th February, 2016. A five-year comprehensive report with statistics will be written and posted in our website and in the SESURUDEV Facebook page after the coming crash course on pigs which will last up to 20th February, 2016. In order to fulfill our mission of technical training en-mass of the population, we have embarked on the writing and publishing of manuals on livestock and agriculture. Since 2009, we wrote and published the only comprehensive book on poultry in Cameroon entitled “Practical Poultry Production and Marketing” by Aloysius Njie Ajua. For lack of funding to print other books, we have since written the following books which are still in manuscript:
a) Intensive Pig production.
b) Rabbit production.
c) Concise General Agriculture.
d) Concise Special Agriculture on selected common crops.
Almost every day, we receive phone calls asking for these books. We need good funding to print such technical books. Normally, as in the developed world, the Government would have given us funding as we are simply assisting the Government in development.
RECOMMENDATIONS TO CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS
ü Considering the huge financial resources that African governments, since independence, have been controlling every year, yet the problem of poverty and unemployment is still very rife, forcing many youths to migrate out of the continent and hundreds of thousands dying in the desert and the Mediterranean Sea in this very perilous attempt.
ü For over a decade now, we have realized that no matter what we do, the poverty level in our countries remains high because of issues on governance, corruption and state-promoted tribalism.
ü African peoples need to do soul-searching self-criticism to ask ourselves how many structural adjustments, debt relief, debt cancellations and repeated doses of advice from the Britten Wood Institutions do we need in order to disentangle ourselves from the grip of poverty, disease and ignorance. Why are the south-east Asian countries which were poorer than us at independence now ranked as emergent countries while African countries continuously fill the UN list of the least developed, food-deficit countries in the world?
ü Meanwhile, African peoples have always been warned that we were in the wrong track. The French agronomist, Rene Dumas, after touring almost all African countries after independence, wrote in his book that “L’Afrique est mal parti”. He meant that African countries have started badly and are on the wrong track.He wrote it some decades ago. He criticized African countries for making the wrong choices and misplacing our priorities and predicted what we see today.
ü In Europe, centuries ago, the agrarian revolution was the spring board to the industrial revolution. Unfortunately African Governments neglected Agriculture before and after the Maputu Declaration (which called on African governments to invest at least 10% of their income on agriculture). Despite all these, many African countries stubbornly remained very heavy food deficit countries until things came to a head in early 2008 as there were food riots in at least four sub-saharan African countries including Cameroon.
ü Indeed, there is a very serious leadership drought in Africa. Since independence our egoistic politicians have messed up everything. They fight to be elected, not to better the lives of their people as they say, but to amass wealth for themselves and enjoy the attributes and reverence of power. That is why we are trapped in poverty and retrogress from the Dark Continent to the laughing stock continent. President Obama of the US, rightly diagnosed the main problem of Africa – that Africa needs strong institutions and not strong leaders. In The Guardian Post newspaper (www.theguardianpost.info) published in Yaounde Cameroon No.0857 of 27th January,2007 (page 8), President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria lamented how politicians of the former regime embezzled with impunity monies allocated for arms, schools and hospitals. He called for a “moral elite, a leadership that is ready to make the sacrifice of self and interest for the good of the people”. If politicians have failed their peoples in most African countries (except for a few that can be counted with the fingers of the hand), the hope remain with the civil society who remain the conscience of the nation-state.
Therefore, civil society organizations (CSOs) in Cameroon in particular and Africa as a whole are called upon to have an eye of scrutiny and a say on the use of the following:
Ø Financial Assistance received from foreign countries e.g. the European Union, US, China or Japan. An example is the 80 billion US dollars promised by China to Africa.
Ø To examine the controversial Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) which Cameroon signed with the European Union. Is it useful to Cameroon in the present context of poor road infrastructure, low supply of energy, very high corruption, low powers of the judiciary and low levels of industrialization? In Europe, governments readily give assistance (which is not misappropriated) to farmers, fishermen and non-governmental organizations. In Africa the aid is either too small, or is misappropriated or is just cosmetic and meant for the media. Can we compete in the same playing ground with industrial and efficient Europe? Can we make the Cameroonian environment to be attractive and conducive for large foreign investors to create factories in Cameroon? That is our only hope with the EPA agreement.
Ø Can the civil society organizations in Cameroon be able to urge or put pressure on the Government to start applying Article 66 of the Constitution? Can we urge the Government to make a law in Cameroon allowing for dual nationality? This will release the enthusiasm of the Cameroonian Diaspora to invest in Cameroon.
Ø We should stem the tsunami of corruption in Cameroon by giving powers of prosecution to the anti-corruption institution, (CONAC). We should give more power, revamp and give more funding to CONAC then create CONAC offices in all the headquarters of Regions and Divisions. We should appoint an ombudsman to each of these CONAC offices. They should investigate denunciations of the illicit accumulation and display of wealth by Ministers, Army Generals, Director Generals of State Corporations, other high public officers, including the taxation, customs, treasury and police officers.
Ø Civil society organizations (CSOs) should discourage the phenomenon of land grabbing by the local elites and foreign governments. A new land law should be made which has to include the concerns of SCOs.
EXPLAINING THE VARIOUS CONCEPTS EMBODIED IN SESURUDEV
· “Self-supporting” means having the mind-set to be readily willing to help yourself come out of poverty. It includes the corollary of not folding your hands and refusing to help yourself until you are helped by someone else and extricating yourself from the aid-dependency syndrome.
· Why emphasis on “Rural Development”? Although there are many urban dwellers that are poor, there are more rural dwellers that are even poorer. This is the cause of rural exodus to major cities. African governments concentrate most of their scarce resources in the development a few major cities and more or less neglect the rural areas, minor towns and the periphery. Farm to market or feeder roads are more or less neglected whereas these are the roads that can stimulate development.
· The motto of SESURUDEV is “Virtue through solidarity” It means we do everything to impart the knowledge we have so that people can make use of it. We endorse what Plato, the ancient Greek philosopher, wrote that “knowledge is virtue and ignorance is vice”. By acquiring knowledge you move away from vice.
· The slogan of SESURUDEV is “Produce what we consume and consume what we produce”. This is a clarion call to, especially the African governments, to provide the irrigation, seed and fertilizer systems for the production of rice which we import in millions of tonnes from Asia. We should catch the fish in our sea coasts which foreign trawlers are catching instead of importing fish from abroad.
· The philosophy of SESURUDEV is “Help yourself to support yourself”. It is the direct explanation of self-supporting as earlier explained above.
