New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute

The New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute (NYPSI) will be observing the 100th anniversary of the founding of its Society on Saturday, February 12, 2011. The Society's status as the oldest psychoanalytic organization in the Americas (the American Psychoanalytic Association being our junior by 3 months) parallels its signal role in the history of psychoanalysis, nationally and internationally, and its outsize influence on the cultural and intellectual life of New York City. Our mission is: To promote excellence in the teaching, research, and provision of psychoanalytic treatment and the application of psychoanalytic principles in advisory, consultative, educational, and therapeutic services to the New York metropolitan community.

Since its founding in 1948, the Treatment Center of The New York Psychoanalytic Institute has served the complementary needs of patients and Institute candidates: matching those individuals who could best utilize psychoanalytic treatment and would otherwise be unable to afford it with the suitable psychoanalyst-in-training. Psychoanalytic candidates are required to treat a minimum of two low-fee patients referred from the Treatment Center. A faculty supervisor is assigned for each case a student has in treatment. The activities of the Treatment Center are conducted by an Affiliated Staff of graduate analysts divided into separate working sections: intake (consultation and referral) and treatment (psychoanalysis and psychotherapy). The Affiliated Staff serves the student program both by selecting cases for supervised psychoanalysis and by treating patients when a transfer of therapist is required by extenuating circumstances. The Treatment Center organizes regular Staff meetings, chaired by the Medical Director, at which case material is presented - in a manner respectful of the patient's confidentiality - by members of the Staff. Prepared discussions are provided by Staff and Faculty members. At intervals these conferences are devoted to follow-up studies.
