Resurrection Williamsburg

As part of our larger network, Resurrection Williamsburg has carefully sought to organize our ministries so that we can work together, by the power of the Spirit, to effect great change in Brooklyn, and specifically in our neighborhood of Williamsburg. To call the people of the city to be stewards of their power and gifts for the honor of Christ and the benefit of urban communities, Resurrection Williamsburg challenges Christians of the city not only to live within the city, but to serve.

Resurrection Williamsburg began in May 2005 as a community united by the promises that God has made to us and kept in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Our life together is one of worship, service and joyful celebration. We partner with ministries throughout the borough, ranging from homeless shelters, local schools and community gardens, and around the world. Along with the rest of our network, Resurrection Williamsburg is also active in new church development, globally, nationally, and locally.

While Resurrection Williamsburg is still fairly new, it is not new in its beliefs and practice. Resurrection Williamsburg wholeheartedly embraces the historic Christian faith expressed in all the ecumenical creeds of the universal church (e.g., the Apostles and Nicene Creeds). It is also committed to the theological heritage of the Protestant Reformation as a member church of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church and the Reformed Communion, and expressed in the Westminster Confession of Faith.

We believe God’s Kingdom is the renewal of all things under His loving rule, and that each congregation should be serving its neighbors and neighborhood in word and deed. To borrow the Apostle Paul’s categories, our churches are both ambassadors and servants. We believe that the Gospel is good news of Christ’s renewal project within us and in the world, and that it must be proclaimed in word and demonstrated in service. We hope that as our churches celebrate Christ and serve Brooklyn, God’s peace will be more and more present in our neighborhoods.

Our Vision: We aim to be a sign of God’s Kingdom and a blessing to our city—through starting and nurturing neighborhood congregations committed to personal conversion, community formation, social justice and cultural renewal in Brooklyn and beyond.

Our Commitments and Beliefs:

The Power of the Gospel. We believe, first and foremost, that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the power of God for salvation and practiced in its biblical fullness can heal and mature individuals, communities and cultures.

The Priority of the Church. We believe that the Gospel creates a new community, the Church of Jesus Christ, which is God’s principal means of growing his Kingdom on earth.

The Practices of the Historic Christian Faith. We believe the creedal doctrines that have united Christians throughout history, and value the common practices that are found within the various streams of the church catholic.

The Place of the City. We believe cities are the most strategic places for the church to embody the gospel in the world. In Brooklyn, this embodiment happens best through neighborhood congregations.
