The Aldo Leopold Nature Center

Established in 1994, the Aldo Leopold Nature Center (ALNC) is a private, non-profit environmental education organization dedicated to providing year-round, interactive programming which, “...teaches the student to see the land, to understand what he sees, and enjoy what he understands,” in the spirit of conservationist Aldo Leopold.

Driven by its mission, ALNC operates two innovative campuses in Dane County. The Monona Campus, featuring award-winning trails winding through a scenic patchwork of child-sized ecosystems, provides a nurturing and safe environment for young children to explore and enjoy the natural world. As these children grow, the Black Earth Campus, with rocky outcropping and rugged trails, provides them with new, exciting physical and intellectual challenges appropriate for more in-depth environmental studies.

ALNC uses both campuses as outdoor classrooms to provide more than 30,000 Wisconsin children, families and teachers each year with opportunities to learn about the natural world and develop a lifelong interest in outdoor activities. Our primary programs are school field trips, after-school programs for economically disadvantaged youth, family programming, scout programs, home school programs, adult lectures, special events and teacher training workshops.

It is our hope that by nurturing children’s natural curiosity and fascination with nature—through ALNC’s innovative and hands on educational programming—we will create a healthier future for our children and our planet. As environmentally aware and empowered students grow, they become healthy, confident community leaders and responsible stewards of the land—well equipped to conquer life’s challenges.
