About Us and Our Programs

About Us

Across the nation, Volunteers of America designs and operates programs that serve abused and neglected children, homeless individuals and families, elders, youth at risk, people with development and physical disabilities, those with chronic mental illness, and ex-offenders returning to society. In Massachusetts, we provide services to elders, youth at risk, and adults recovering from substance abuse

History

Volunteers of America was founded in 1896 by Maud and Ballington Booth. Today, more than 11,000 professional staff and 40,000 volunteers work in more than 39 states to provide service to more than 2 million people throughout the country. Volunteers of America is one of the largest human service organizations, with more than 100 different programs. Volunteers of America is also one of the nation's most efficient charities, with 88 cents of every dollar spent going directly into programs and services.

Our Mission to Serve

Volunteers of America exists to offer the services people need to make positive changes in their lives. We help those most in need, especially the vulnerable, the hardest to serve, and those facing multiple challenges. Our programs are designed to rehabilitate, not just treat symptoms, and our professional staff is committed to this comprehensive mission to serve the whole person.
