We own and operate John Steinbeck’s birthplace and childhood home, a historically treasured landmark.

The home is sustained by serving fresh, locally sourced cuisine and offering tours, books, and gifts to local and international guests.

Valley Guild was formed by eight enthusiastic women who shared a common interest in gourmet cooking and a desire to showcase the produce of the Salinas Valley. Through the hard work and dedication of these wonderful women, the historic Steinbeck House, built in 1898 and childhood home of John Steinbeck, was purchased, renovated and opened in 1974 as a non-profit restaurant and gift shop. Since 1974, the Valley Guild has owned and operated John Steinbeck’s birthplace, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. They have accomplished this by serving fresh, locally sourced cuisine and offering tours, books, and gifts to local and international guests. The house has maintained its authentic nature and has many pictures, memorabilia and furniture of the Steinbeck family on display.

For 51 years, the Valley Guild and the Steinbeck House have been a meaningful part of the Salinas Valley community, especially through its volunteer programs. The Steinbeck House provides teens and young adults with valuable life and career experience through volunteer and service opportunities within the restaurant and at community events. The Steinbeck House runs with a small team of four paid staff and an incredible 146 volunteers. These dedicated volunteers help to maintain the historic home, create a memorable dining experience (with all gratuities benefiting the house), host special events like Beth’s High Afternoon Tea Party, and offer tours of the property.
