Legal Assistance to the Elderly’s mission is to protect and advance the right of San Francisco’s seniors and adults with disabilities to be housed, healthy, financially stable, and safe.
San Francisco’s astronomical rise in evictions is hitting our city’s senior and disabled residents especially hard. LAE provides free full-scope representation to elderly and disabled residents, many on limited incomes, who urgently need our help.
LAE is often the last chance for our clients to save a home, stop financial or physical elder abuse, or retain vital benefits. More than ever, there is an increasing need for our services.

Legal Assistance to the Elderly (LAE) provides free legal advice and representation in civil matters to San Francisco's seniors and adults living with disabilities. LAE works closely with community-based and governmental health and social service providers because legal problems faced by this vulnerable community often require a multi-disciplinary approach to achieve a lasting solution. We take a holistic approach to the legal issues these clients face, often assisting with multiple legal issues as well as connecting clients with vital social services. The referring issue - for instance eviction defense - may have its roots in other legal issues, such as elder abuse or an unwarranted termination of benefits. Because our attorneys work closely and collaboratively, they can tap into the expertise of our entire legal team to address the immediate issue as well as other underlying legal issues that our vulnerable clients face.
Our primary practice areas include Eviction Defense/Housing, Reasonable Accommodations, Income Support and Benefits Advocacy, Physical and Financial Elder Abuse Prevention, Healthcare Access and Preservation, Consumer Debt Collection Defense, End of life Planning, and Conservatorship Defense. To qualify for our services you must be 60 years old or an adult with disabilities and live in San Francisco.
