The Coalition for At-Risk-Restoring Youth is a non-profit organization dedicated to making a difference in the lives of at-risk youth through dermatology, medical, and social skills programs that enhance self-esteem. A multitude of children entering the foster care system undergo mental instability via being displaced from siblings, family members, or previous child abusers. According to the Stuart Foundation, 45% of foster youth complete high school, compared to 53% of the similarly disadvantaged youth and 79% of the general student population. Quality of life measurements show that chronic skin disorders adversely compromise the well-being of children. Although not life-threatening these disorders are visible to others and in turn make it that much harder, for an already disenfranchised group of youth, that are now more susceptible to social problems, lack of self-confidence, embarrassment, and low self-esteem. Founded by Pearl E. Grimes MD in 2005, CARRY has risen to combat the numbers that represent our disenfranchised youth. It is the goal of CARRY to provide at-risk and foster youth with equal opportunities to health care, social development skills, educational opportunities and more, no matter what their personal background might be, or their socio-economic status. CARRY serves as a community resource that promotes and condones personal development, self-esteem growth, resilience and healthy life choices.
