Orion magazine invites readers into a community of caring for the planet. Through writing and art that explore the connection between nature and culture, Orion inspires new thinking about how humanity might live on Earth justly, sustainably, and joyously.

Since 1982, Orion has been an urgent and eloquent voice for the planet. Today, Orion publishes four print issues a year with an international print circulation of nearly 15,000; our digital edition reaches about 4,000 readers each day. Orion was named a 2026 National Magazine Award finalist and has won a Whiting Award and the Utne Independent Press Award. Our stories have anthologized widely, including the Best American Essays and best American. Science and Nature Writing collections, and our writers have won the Pushcart Prize and James Beard Award. In addition to publishing a quarterly magazine, Orion hosts online and in-person writers’ workshops and publishes books.
