Alabama Humanities Alliance

Our mission is to provide context, build empathy, and make our state a more vibrant place to live. All through the humanities.

Founded in 1974, the Alabama Humanities Alliance is a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. As a statewide nonprofit, we’re passionate about using the humanities to make Alabama better. AHA supports programs that encourage impactful storytelling, lifelong learning, and civic engagement. We provide Alabamians with opportunities to appreciate our rich history and diverse cultures. And to connect with our communities and see each other as fully human.

In our work, we:

• Spark civic engagement and tough conversations.
• Bring the humanities to life for teachers and students.
• Celebrate storytelling and take it on the road.
• Walk in the footsteps of civil rights icons.
• Bring Smithsonian exhibits to Alabama.
• Award grants for public humanities projects statewide.
