L'Arche Irenicon in the Greater Boston Area

L'Arche Irenicon is part of a world-wide network of over 130 communities inspired by Jesus' message of unconditional love for all human beings. At the heart of these communities are people with developmental disabilities who share their lives with people without disabilities who come to live with them. Together they embrace the gifts that each one brings to their shared lives.

L'Arche, which means THE ARK in French, began in 1964 when Jean Vanier invited two men with developmental disabilities to leave an institution and come and share their lives with him. From this first community, born in France and in the Roman Catholic tradition, many other communities have developed in various cultural and religious traditions. These communities are united by the same vision and the same spirit of welcome, sharing and simplicity.

Irenicon, which means MESSAGE OF PEACE in Greek, began in 1983 and embraces three goals:

-To create homes where faithful relationships based on forgiveness and celebration are nurtured.

-To reveal the unique value and vocation of each person.

-To change society by choosing to live relationships in community as a sign of hope and love.
