The American Stroke Foundation was established as the first Stroke Resource Center for the more 7,500 stroke survivors, their families and caregivers in the metropolitan Kansas City area. The center will serve as a national model to be replicated in other parts of the country.

The Foundation does no duplicate existing services but rather complements them by providing the missing link in the nurturing of stroke survivors and those who care for them.

In our community, four out of five families will be impacted by stroke. It is the number one cause of adult disability, leaving two thirds of these survivors with significant residual physical and or emotional effects. Half of the people suffering strokes will be under fifty years of age. While the sudden impact of stroke goes away, it manifests itself in survivors' daily lives, often making each day a struggle.
