Organization and Programs

New Global Citizens is a non-profit organization providing students with a concrete way to create community change.  New Global Citizens programs provide students with a global perspective, an opportunity to create change, and the skills needed to thrive in a global knowledge economy. Our classroom curriculum, professional development trainings, and afterschool programs empower teachers and enable students to develop skills in global competency, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, digital literacy, and leadership.  New Global Citizens’ vision is everyone lives and acts as new global citizens. New global citizens are committed to harnessing the knowledge and skills necessary to make a positive impact.

Classroom Program – The Classroom Program offers units, lesson plans, hands-on student activities, and resources for teachers to enhance their content area with global issues. Aligned with academic standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and 21st Century Skills, the program empowers students to be global citizens and change makers in their own communities. In addition, teachers will have access to NGC staff support and a community of NGC educators across the nation.

Afterschool Program – A student-led program designed to help students create a team of passionate individuals to raise global awareness on their campuses and in their communities, while simultaneously helping a grassroots organization tackle real life issues.

Professional Development – New Global Citizens offers professional development courses (in-person and online) that are a supplement to the Classroom Program or a stand-alone resource for teachers.

Earned Revenue Model

In 2012, New Global Citizens launched an earned revenue model to support the long-term sustainability of the organization and create a self-funding Classroom Program. Private and public schools and districts purchase the Classroom Program for $300/classroom for a full year subscription to curriculum, staff support, online resources, teacher community, and connection to NGC Global Projects. The fee does not currently cover the full cost to implement the program and is subsidized with philanthropic donations raised by New Global Citizens. As our program grows, the cost to deliver the program will decrease.

The Classroom Program has grown from 110 classrooms and 3,000 students in the 2012-2013 school year to 600 classrooms and 18,000 students this school year. By the 2017-2018 school year NGC aims to reach more than 2,000 classrooms and 57,000 student participants across North America and the Classroom Program be self-funded. In order to scale to 2,000 classrooms, we are raising $750,000 over the next three years to increase staff capacity and curriculum offerings.

History

New Global Citizens is the result of a 2008 merger between two dedicated and globally-focused education nonprofits. The first, Youth Re:Action Corps, was founded in 2005 by Courtney Klein, a young entrepreneur, who wanted engage youth in global and local issues and service. The second, Youth Philanthropy Worldwide (YPW), was founded in 2002 by Esther Hewlett. After a Take Your Daughter to Work Day, Esther started YPW to engage youth in philanthropy and social change at both the local and global level.
