Earth & Space Research

Earth & Space Research (ESR) is a Seattle-based, nonprofit institute specializing in oceanographic research. Our mission is to increase societal understanding of the Earth system through scientific research and public education.

Composed of a small group of diverse research scientists and professional administrators, ESR provides a unique environment for scientific research and encourages excellence in scientific inquiry through a supportive and non-bureaucratic management style.

Incorporated in 1995 under the laws of the State of Washington, ESR has been granted tax-exempt status under section 501(c)3 of the United States Internal Revenue Code. Our organization is primarily funded by governmental agencies including the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Office of Naval Research (ONR), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

ESR's organizational culture encourages a work/life balance for our employees. We provide an excellent employee benefits package and a flexible approach to our work. Our management team and Board of Directors guides organizational structure and development and our scientists remain generally autonomous in managing their own projects and funding. Management of contracts and grants, as well as administrative services, are provided by the members of our experienced and dedicated business office.
