DREAM ACHIEVERS YOUTH ORGANIZATION (DAYO)

Dream achievers youth organization(DAYO) was founded way back in 2005 on the 28th of May by a group of young volunteers who needed to mitigate challenges among young people through community theatre as a participatory strategy of disseminating, educating and informing the community on issues of adolescence sexual and reproductive health, human rights, child rights and sexuality with a focus on youths so that they can protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies, drug abuse and HIV/AIDS among other issues.

PROGRAMS

DAYO works to sensitize the community on the importance of education and works to improvethe quality of education currently available. They have collaborated with Uwezo Kenya to improve the quality education in public schools by seeks to assess basic literacy and numeracy of children between 6-16 years by carrying out an Annual Learning Assessment (ALA). The aim is to create an educational community that collectively seeks to achieve quality education for all. Dream Achievers Youth Organization is implementing this project in Coast Province within Mombasa County under Women Educational Researchers of Kenya.

ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT

DAYO supports its participating women, youths and youth organizations with trainings on Income Generating Activities (IGAs) such as vegetable farming, business training, soup making, tailoring, fish farming and pottery. Through funds from Youth Enterprise Development Fund, the organization has engaged in various income generating activities such as hiring of public address system, chairs and tents to meet daily obligations.

HEALTH & HIV/AIDS

DAYO raises awareness in the community on issues of HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, primary healthcare and environmental sanitation. The group works on environmental sanitation by collecting garbage within their villages for a small fee to generate income. DAYO also works to provide access to counseling for HIV/AIDS and substance abuse for those in need. General healthcare is also promoted within the community through education and sensitization.

ADVOCACY

DAYO is advocating for land rights through lobbying for better policies that will allow community to access land, as it is understood land in the coastal area is one of the major historical injustices that majority are squatters on their own land. A part from that DAYO has been doing campaigns on different issue that support community development. DAYO has been among one of the community organization which has conducted civic education on peaceful election voting and making wise decision in choosing their leaders.
