TO CHANGE EVERYTHING, WE NEED EVERYONE

The Peoples Climate Movement NY is committed to building on the extraordinary energy of the more than 400,000 people who marched in New York City on Sept. 21, 2014. On that historic day, we demanded action on the global climate crisis to avert the catastrophic consequences of our unsustainable reliance on fossil, nuclear and industrial biomass fuels. Now, with an urgency that is informed by sound science and moral imperative, we re-affirm our commitment to defend Mother Earth to sustain and nurture all life.

Our city must take strong, creative steps and offer bold leadership in the fight for climate justice. We call on all New Yorkers to join us and commit to immediately and equitably remaking NYC so that by 2030 we can be 100% powered by the sun, wind, tides, geothermal and other sustainable and safe technologies. We must initiate and support strategies to increase energy efficiency and conservation, reduce waste, improve the quality of our air and water, and expand the sustainable production of food.

These changes are only possible if we ground our work in a commitment to climate justice. This means acknowledging that a system that puts profit over people is threatening all life on Earth. It means ensuring that communities of color, indigenous and low-income people, and others most immediately threatened by the climate crisis are in the forefront of building our movement, identifying problems, and developing solutions. It means addressing the inequality in access to the resources needed to deal with the challenges of climate change. It means a just transition to a sustainable economy and, good, union jobs. It means that our work for climate justice cannot be separated from the struggles for racial, gender, economic and social justice, and peace. It means that as we fight to preserve the commons we also work to expand democracy.

HOW WE DO OUR WORK

The Peoples Climate Movement NY brings together community organizations, labor unions, religious institutions, elected officials, service providers, young people and elders, artists, media outlets, educational centers, and many others from every neighborhood of our city.

People learn and take action in many ways.

• We organize and mobilize using a wide range of tactics including, but not limited to, public protest, direct action, pressure on elected officials and corporate structures, education, and media campaigns.
• We act to stop the production, use and distribution of fossil fuels, promote effective legislative and administrative action, demand governance reforms, create educational resources, and publicize solutions.
• We initiate new efforts and support projects and actions by other organizations that will help realize this vision.
• We confront obstacles to achieving a NYC that is 100% sustainable by 2030, while seizing opportunities for rapid change that are within our collective reach.
• Encouraging respect and cooperation among different approaches, we make our voices heard and press for concrete changes in energy and environmental policies and practices, and for social justice.

The climate crisis is a global reality. Our local efforts must be part of a larger state, national and international movement. When it is appropriate and feasible, we connect our work with statewide and regional efforts and respond to calls for nationwide or global actions.
