Often called “my favorite union” by Martin Luther King Jr., the New England Health Care Employees Union-District 1199 is a bold, democratic labor organization with a long activist tradition.

In these challenging times, when so much wealth and power is concentrated in the hands of so few, it is more important than ever to unite working people with the broader political and social justice movement to win respect, dignity, economic justice, and racial equality on the job and in our communities.

SEIU 1199 New England is a democratic healthcare workers union rooted in the day-to-day fights of caregivers across Connecticut and Rhode Island. In recent years, members have won through militant direct action, a $20/hour standard for thousands of low-wage healthcare workers, taken on racism in the workplace, fought for progressive policy in state legislatures, and built the kind of worker power that changes workplaces, industries, and communities.

As a proud local of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), one of the largest and most powerful labor organizations in the country, we are part of a 2-million-member movement united by the belief in the dignity and worth of workers.
