Berkeley Speaks Newspaper/a project of EAST BAY MEDIA CENTER/Berkeley Speaks

Young and veteran advocates from grassroots movements, progressive CBOs, and city commissions, and people with backgrounds in journalism and local government have come together to create Berkeley Speaks Newspaper, an online paper dedicated to social justice and human rights in our city.

There is no other newspaper in the Berkeley area that is dedicated to social change. As people who are working to improve, or even save the world, we know what is missing. We intend to make the social and political issues of the day clear to the community, so that regular people can make informed decisions that affect the future of the city.

Berkeley Speaks Newspaper will provide accurate information, clear analysis, and investigative journalism. Readers, whose trust we rely on, deserve reporting that remains civil and avoids stereotyping.

The Society of Professional Journalists urges that "all people in all media...recognize a special obligation to serve as watchdogs over public affairs and government. Seek to ensure that the public’s business is conducted in the open, and that public records are open to all." We are taking up that challenge.
