HMSDC MISSION & GOALS
The mission of the Houston Minority Supplier Development Council (HMSDC) is to actively involve its members in efforts that will increase and expand business opportunities and business growth for minority business enterprises (MBEs).

In carrying out its mission, the HMSDC will:

  • Be accountable to HMSDC certified MBEs and corporate members for verifiable results in minority business development.
  • Be a recognized standard of quality, leadership, cooperation and prestige, reflective of member pride and commitment.
  • Be fair and ethical in all matters.
  • Promote business opportunities and capabilities of minority entrepreneurs and work to eliminate barriers for equal economic opportunity for MBEs in the marketplace.
  • Be proactive in helping MBEs respond to issues and developments that impact their business opportunities and growth.
  • Help corporations and government agencies develop, maintain and expand minority business development programs and recognize those that conduct outstanding programs.
  • Maintain a financially sound organization.
  • Promote educational research activities and services directed at the establishment, development, expansion and encouragement of minority- owned businesses.


EXPERIENCE

The successful candidate will be an established and respected leader who is capable of continuing to raise the visibility of the HMSDC organization while achieving its strategic goals.  The ideal candidate will possess at least 10 years of solid executive management and leadership experience (organizational, fiscal, and human resources), along with a balance of professional experience within a corporate and entrepreneurial setting.  Experience should include a tangible track record illustrating initiative, growth of an account base, and strategic approaches that were personally designed and implemented to create such successes.

Critical attributes of the President include:

·       Knowledge of nonprofit organization policy-making and fundraising.

·       Strong communication, motivation and influencing skills, as demonstrated by successfully leading an organization through a competitive environment, working in partnership with the staff, a highly engaged Board of Directors, and a broad network of constituents in both the private and public sectors.

·       Excellent presentation, writing, and public speaking skills with the ability to craft a message, represent HMSDC as an external ambassador, and influence current and new stakeholders to ensure visibility for the brand.

·       Effective C-Suite executive relationship-building experience across various market segments (manufacturing, healthcare, financial, retail, etc.).

·       Constantly “raises the bar” and drives the organization and its constituencies towards a higher level of achievement and measurable results.

·       Anticipates and deals with issues proactively, decisively, and persistently.

·       Experience with advanced capacity building (joint ventures, strategic alliances, mergers, acquisitions).

·       Proven ability as a visionary/strategic planner; the President/CEO develops, documents, communicates, and executes a five-year strategic plan.

·       Politically savvy; possess the ability to navigate networks within the government and private sectors.

·       Successful track record as a people developer and leader.

·       Evidence of a strong network within the professional community that can be built and expanded to extend HMSDC’s reach.

·       Experience within corporate and/or government procurement, preferably with knowledge of the regulations accompanying the procurement function and vendor management.

·       A team builder with experience in the management of, and consistent value delivery to, geographically dispersed constituents across state lines.

·       Strong self-direction with an exceptional energy level, self-motivation, and results-oriented analytical thinking.

·       Ability to travel to support HMSDC, NMSDC, and initiatives of Corporate Members.


RESPONSIBILITIES

The President is responsible for determining and formulating policies to provide overall direction of Council operations and activities within guidelines established by the Board.  Responsibilities of the President include creating and executing the organization’s vision and strategy as well as keeping the Board apprised of the organization’s progress.

Below is a non-exhaustive snapshot of some of the responsibilities of the President:

·       Prepare and administer the annual budget, with the Board’s approval.

·       Develop and administer policies and controls to ensure the organization is fiscally responsible.

·       Develop and implement annual as well as long-term goals and objectives with Board input and approval.

·       Plan, direct, and coordinate operational activities at the highest level of management with the help of subordinate managers.

·       Raise capital to adequately fund HMSDC objectives.

·       Ensure compliance with Standards of Affiliation established by the NMSDC.

·       Serve as HMSDC’s principal spokesperson on issues impacting the minority business community.

·       Establish and strengthen relationships with corporations, business leaders, community leaders, and other organizations that can assist in furthering the mission of HMSDC.

·       Recruit corporate members and minority business members.

·       Develop strategy for creating and increasing business opportunities for certified minority businesses.

·       Assist buying organizations in meeting their supplier diversity program objectives, including program design and implementation, and minority business sourcing and development.

·       Develop and implement programs that identify, recruit, train, and promote minority-owned businesses.

·       Collect and maintain data on minority vendors located in HMSDC’s geographical service area.

·       Serve as staff liaison between HMSDC and NMSDC.

·       Communicate opportunities to minority businesses and business assistance groups.

·       Develop and implement community and media relations strategies for HMSDC.

·       Provide staff support to the Board, Executive Advisory Board, and other committees as directed.

·       Provide staff training.

·       Assists the Chairperson of the Board in planning Board meetings, and providing input with to chair assignments.

·       Assist the Board in identifying, interviewing, recruiting, and orienting prospective new members of the Board and in monitoring Board performance

·       Perform other related duties as directed by the Chairperson, Co-Chairpersons, and the Board.

·       Assist the chairperson of the Board in planning Board meetings, and providing input in regards to chair assignments.

·       Assist the Board in identifying, interviewing, recruiting, and orienting prospective new members of the Board and in monitoring Board performance

·       Enter into contracts, leases, or purchase agreements within limits established by Board Policy with vendors for equipment, supplies, and services.

·       Procure insurance to cover all liabilities as an employer, service provider, and grantor, as well as coverage for our own office and staff health benefits.

·       Prepare monthly reports in a timely manner for Board meetings.

·       Contract for the annual audit and IRS form 990 reported by an outside accounting firm.

·       Oversee preparation of all reports to outside local, state, and federal agencies.

·       Work with the staff and the Board to assure effective programs and services that meet or exceed constituents’ needs and expectations.

·       Implement annual membership campaign for increasing corporate membership and recruitment/retention of MBEs.

EDUCATION

A Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree is preferred.

LOCATION

Houston, Texas; ability to travel required.
