Humanity & Inclusion is an independent charity working in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster. We work tirelessly alongside disabled and vulnerable people to help meet their basic needs, improve their living conditions and promote respect for their dignity and fundamental rights.

Our Vision

Outraged by the injustice faced by people with disabilities and vulnerable populations, we aspire to a world of solidarity and inclusion, enriched by our differences, where everyone can live in dignity.

Our History

In 1982, 160,000 Cambodians fled the Khmer Rouge regime to seek safety in the refugee camps of Thailand. Hidden amongst the crowds, more than 6,000 amputees struggled to survive, many of them victims of anti-personnel landmines. No one was concerned with their fate.

Outraged by the situation, two young doctors decided to produce artificial limbs using the only materials available – bamboo and a few strips of leather. Humanity & Inclusion was created, and with it the start of an ongoing fight against the injustice faced by the world’s most vulnerable people.

Over time, our organisation has expanded into a global network supporting disabled and vulnerable people in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster. We work tirelessly to help meet their basic needs, improve their living conditions and promote respect for their dignity and fundamental rights.

But even today, so much more remains to be done.

Around the world, explosive weapons are still claiming lives and limbs. And people with disabilities are still being excluded and forgotten.

Our Impact

Thanks to individual supporters just like you, Humanity & Inclusion supports disabled and vulnerable people in around 60 countries affected by conflict, disaster and poverty.

As well as our amazing donors, we also rely on the dedication of our 3,278 staff around the world, including 2,522 local staff supporting our programmes on the ground.

Since HI was founded in 1982, our work has benefitted millions of people worldwide.

Our Awards

Nobel Peace Prize

HI was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997 as a founding member of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines which led to the signing of the Mine Ban Treaty.

Today, we continue the fight against landmines and other explosive weapons which indiscriminately kill and injure civilians.

Hilton Humanitarian Prize

HI was awarded the 2011 Hilton Humanitarian Prize in recognition of almost 30 years of humanitarian action.
