Dr. Gary Burnstein Community Health Clinic

The Dr. Gary Burnstein Community Health Clinic (GBCHC) is Michigan’s largest free clinic and provides free medical, dental, and pharmaceutical care to uninsured Michigan residents. GBCHC has experienced tremendous growth in recent years and seeks a new team member to manage strategic partnerships with local hospitals and emergency rooms to help their uninsured patients access high-quality care. 

The Burnstein Story

In 1997, after working 2O years as a cardiologist, Dr. Gary Burnstein began providing care for patients from a homeless shelter in Pontiac, Michigan. Dr. Burnstein passed away in 2003, but friends, family, and community members honored his dream of providing care to the uninsured by establishing the Dr. Gary Burnstein Community Health Clinic (GBCHC). Today, GBCHC is Michigan’s largest free clinic and continues to provide free medical and dental care to the uninsured, underinsured and homeless of Michigan. Our commitment is, as always, to provide quality care in a compassionate environment with dignity and respect.

Growth at GBCHC

Dr. Burnstein’s dream of providing free medical care for those in need began in a closet at the shelter and recently moved to a 7,000 square foot location. The new, larger space has allowed the clinic to expand its role in the community and treat more patients from a wider geographic area. Additionally, GBCHC has expanded patient services in recent years to offer more preventative care as well as a monthly food distribution, nutrition and health classes, and community training including CPR and Naloxone administration. 

Who are GBCHC Patients?

GBHC cares for individuals who are 18-65 years old, uninsured or underinsured, and at or below 250% of the federal poverty level. GBCHC’s provided more than 2,000 medical and 1,000 dental appointments to patients who had no other options for care in 2017. 

How is it Possible?

GBCHC is proud to provide top-quality medical, dental, specialty care, and prescriptions to our patients on an annual budget of only $550,000. A committed volunteer staff of more than 150 individuals who ensure their friends and neighbors have access to medical care when they are uninsured. GBCHC has five full-time employees who ensure that the day-to-day needs of the clinic are met.
