At Family Dog Rescue, we are committed to living up to our motto: DOG + HUMAN = FAMILY

DOG:  We save family-friendly dogs of all shapes and sizes. We give priority to deserving-but-overlooked dogs in California’s overcrowded municipal shelters. Our mission can also take us across the country and around the world. All dogs are carefully screened for good behavior and receive proper veterinary care, including spay/neuter surgery and vaccinations. We seek out kid-friendly and dog-friendly dogs who can get along with everyone in your family. While we do not accept dogs with a history of aggression, we are happy to save the underdogs, including blind/deaf, disabled, and shy dogs whom we believe have the potential to be ideal family dogs.

HUMAN: We are excited to find adopters who share our love of dogs. Our adoption process is a one-on-one interaction that looks past any formulaic checklist of the perfect dog owner. We encourage families with young children to adopt a rescue dog, rather than buy from a puppy mill or backyard breeder. We are proud to be the “first dog” for new or inexperienced adopters who have carefully weighed the responsibilities of dog ownership and are ready to start families of their own.

FAMILY: We believe that when you adopt your new dog, a family is created. We have an experienced, compassionate family of shelter volunteers and staff who ensure that our dogs receive proper enrichment and socialization from the time they enter our program, thus easing the transition to their forever families. Finally, through events and social media outreach, we strive to create a community-wide family of Family Dog Rescue alumni. We advocate for greater public awareness about the importance of spay/neuter surgery and responsible dog ownership.

Family Dog Rescue is a grassroots, 501(c)(3) dog rescue organization founded in 2010. We save 1,000+ family-friendly dogs per year that would otherwise be at risk of euthanasia and place them with loving forever families.  

Family Dog Rescue sponsors Loup Garou Rescue and The Kern Project. We have been visited or featured by The Discovery Channel, The Huffington Post, PayPal, Martha Stewart Living, Uber, Instagram, Ian Somerhalder Foundation, and Chicken Soup for the Soul. We receive support from Friends of San Francisco Animal Care & Control, PETCO, Maddie’s Fund, and many local Bay Area businesses. Family Dog Rescue was named as one of “San Francisco’s favorite charities” by 7x7 Magazine in 2014. We are grateful to have an excellent rating on Yelp and Facebook and strong community throughout California, the United States, Mexico, Guatemala, and beyond.
