Umthathi Training Project Trust

Umthathi Training Project is a Non-Government Organisation situated in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Our offices are situated in the Grahamstown Township enabling us to be close to and in touch with the people we work with. Our mission is to promote a better quality of life and sustainable healthy living through an integrated capacity building programme in organic food production, nutrition & health, income generation, the cultivation & conservation of useful indigenous plants and information and coping mechanisms on climate change. Our aim is to raise the productivity of previously disadvantaged and poor people thereby enhancing their standard of living.

Umthathi provides innovative training in the cultivation of sustainable food gardens and integrative educational health & livelihood programmes that empower people to improve their quality of life. Our training takes place in economically and socially vulnerable communities in peri-urban areas, small rural towns, villages and townships within a 200 km radius from Grahamstown.

Our mission and aim are carried through to our participants through our training programme, which takes place in about 40 schools and ten to twelve community groups each year. We train around 3300 learners, 400 participants in our community groups and about 300 community members through other trainings. We thus train a total of approximately 4000 people a year, which are our direct beneficiaries. Approximately 20 000 people benefit indirectly via our direct beneficiaries.
