College Area Community Garden

  • Missão

In 2012, we created a community garden/urban farm with an attractive network of plots and informal meeting areas to foster a greater sense of community among local area residents, K-12 students, and all San Diego State University affiliates. Residents within the College Area Community Council (CACC) boundaries and SDSU affiliates are all invited to become gardeners and/or volunteers. We created over 100 garden plots of varying sizes and lease them at a modest monthly rate of 25 cents per square foot, payable on a yearly basis. We teach and follow organic farming practices to improve garden health. We hold workshops about organic gardening and sustainability issues. Composting is done onsite to reduce waste and enrich the soil. We use water-wise irrigation. We are catching and storing rainwater and have a working solar energy system.

    Sobre Nós

Remember the taste of a perfectly ripe and luscious tomato, crisp carrot or sweet and tender corn on the cob? Sadly, in today’s agri-business world, we are routinely denied this pleasure in the name of convenience and profits for corporate owners. Enter the nationwide community gardens movement. Private, non-profit and other community garden groups are springing up with one main goal: grow and consume quality food in their own neighborhoods.

Known as the College Area Community Garden, the non-profit group has 6 elected Board Members representing the general community as well as SDSU affiliates. Our email interest list currently totals over 800 people and news flashes are sent to over 8000 local area residents via Nextdoor.com. Come on over to help us during bi-monthly volunteer work parties! See our website: www.collegeareagarden.org
