Founded in 1809, the Massachusetts Bible Society has as its purpose the furthering of biblical and theological study and reflection with emphasis on the themes of hope, compassion and justice. MBS provides a variety of book services, sponsors a number of educational programs, and provides grants of Bibles and other scriptural material to organizations such as prison chaplaincies, Habitat for Humanity, AIDS hospice centers and groups working with homeless people. In recent years, the Society has been a strong advocate for widening the understanding of biblical texts by listening to voices that have often been marginalized, such as women and those living in the two-thirds world.
