Space of His Own

Sobre Nós

Space of His Own is a mentoring program for fifth-grade boys in the City of Alexandria. Throughout the school year, mentors and mentees meet one night a week from 5:30 to 8:00 pm to enjoy dinner and work on a carpentry project. Boys learn lifelong lessons and skills as they build chests and bookshelves, carve nameplates, and learn how to wire a lamp with the guiding hand of a mentor. At the conclusion of the program, mentors help to renovate each boy's personal space or bedroom using the projects they have built together over the course of the program.

Space of His Own partners with the Alexandria Court Services Unit.

Vision:

To reach disadvantaged boys in communities nationwide and prevent juvenile criminal involvement.

To have a lasting impact by fostering one-to-one mentor and peer group relationships beyond the one-year program.

To help boys develop life skills in the areas of healthy eating, social skills, anger management, conflict resolution, etiquette and community service.

To provide every participant with a personalized space of his own that encourages creativity, conveys a sense of value and worth, and gives a lasting reminder of his circle of support and care.
