Moral Injury Support Network For Servicewomen, Inc. (MISNS, pronounced “missions”) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation based in North Carolina, but serving women veterans throughout the U.S. and Canada. It is organized for the purpose of providing support to women veterans, current Servicewomen, and families suffering from moral injury (MI). We do this by conducting research, educating support providers on the effects and treatment mechanisms of MI, and providing direct support to women veterans through our counseling and education services.
Moral injury occurs when someone experiences a traumatic event that shakes them to their core and deeply violates their sense of right and wrong. Originally coined as a term to explain what happens to a soldier’s soul as a result of killing in combat, many have come to see that moral injury can occur through a variety of experiences, including sexual assault, retaliation for reporting violations of regulations, gender harassment, and other hurtful events. There is a strong connection between moral injury and suicide, homelessness, substance abuse, and physical ailments. We believe that effective support to the morally injured could go a long ways towards eliminating veteran suicide.
