Global music ensemble LIBANA holds a distinctive place in Boston’s musical community. The ensemble of six women, founded in 1979, is dedicated to research, exploration, and performance of traditional and contemporary music and dance from the world’s many cultures, especially as handed down through the creative traditions of women. Through Libana’s music, audiences and listeners around the world have experienced a universality of spirit and humanity that transcends borders, political and religious differences, and ancient conflicts.

Libana performs a richly varied tapestry of women’s traditional, contemporary, secular and spiritual music and dance—from Algeria to Nepal, Iran to Malaysia, Bulgaria to Bolivia, and from Egypt to Israel. On stage, this diversity of artistic expression is unified with stories, translations, and ethnic instrumentation that illuminate the music’s cultural source and context.
