FCM began in 1968 as men who had resigned from the Roman Catholic priesthood sought a new religious organization in which to minister and espouse a progressive vision of Christian life. They formed FCM. Within a few years FCM was commissioning both men and women for ministry as wedding officiants, faith community leaders and chaplains. Recognizing that faith communities formed the basis of this new vision, house churches and larger communities of faith became part of the life of FCM. In 2001 FCM became a recognized endorsing body for chaplains and counselors engaged in specialized ministries. Over time the flavor of Roman Catholicism has decreased in FCM. Today FCM has 500 individual members and 25 faith communities. While our history emerged from Roman Catholicism, FCM currently seeks to be an inclusive and multi-faith organization.
