La Escuela de la Comedia y el Mimo

Sobre Nós

Our History

La Escuela de la Comedia y el Mimo is a social project that has been in existence for 11 years. The school was started as a project by the Venezuelan clown troupe Saperoco. The initial school consisted of 10 children from various barrios in Granada between the ages of 10 and 14 who began learning circus and theater skills under the direction of Diego Gené. Over the course of the years, this group formed into a traveling performance troupe, touring Europe and South America. In 2009, the members of this core group, now amazingly skilled young adults, decided to start an ambitious new project; a large-scale circus and art school for the children of Granada. This would allow them to pass on the skills that had enriched their lives to another generation. The core group built a beautiful space, called 'La Casa de las Botellitas' and the school opened its doors in February 2009.

Our School

Since its inauguration, the school has been a great success. Sixty-five children from some of the poorest barrios of Granada attend the school five days a week, arriving at mid-day for lunch cooked at the School, and returning home at 4 pm on a bus provided by La Escuela. The Children’s School aims to provide a supportive, cooperative environment that enables children to learn critical skills, and gain self-respect and confidence. The School has a multidisciplinary curriculum, teaching mime, clowning, juggling, acrobatics, crafts, painting, puppetry and other circus skills. Volunteers offer English and computer classes and help children with their homework. Unlike many other social projects in Nicaragua, the school is run by Nicaraguans. The director and head instructors are young people from the community who have been with the project since its inception. The enthusiasm of the children in the school is incredible and fills the school with life. The children present the skills that they learn with deep pride, whether it be an acrobatics presentation, mime show or puppet play. The school to them is more than just a way to pass the time, it is a place where they know that they can go to seek support, talk to an adult from their community, and interact with their peers in a safe and secure environment.
